The Akwa Ibom State Government has said its 21-storey building in Uyo is meant to silence multinational oil companies who said that the state did not have facilities to host them in the state.
It was learnt that the building was currently under construction and was initially intended to be sited at the former Etuk Market by Etuk and Aka Road, Uyo but was subsequently sited at the Banking Layout, Udo Udoma Avenue for convenience and security.
Speaking with journalists in Uyo on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr Akan Okon, said the project would cost N19bn, adding that it was being funded through Public Private Partnership with the private sector providing 40 per cent and the government 60 per cent.
He lamented, “I want to place on record that we do not have even a kiosk of any of the multinational oil companies in Akwa Ibom State.
“It was based on discussions between the Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, and the major oil producing companies operating in our state that the arrangement was reached to build the structure to stop the excuse that the state does not have infrastructure for them to operate.”
