Federal Government has pledged to establish hydro-power dams for rural electrification as part of measures to address the energy needs and boost power supply in the country.
Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science and Technology, revealed this at the weekend when he received a delegation of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology who visited the ministry.
Onu said the projects and transformers have already been designed indigenously by the ministry’s engineers for the hydro-power dams.
The minister also briefed the committee on the 774 Young Scientists Award of the ministry, adding that the programme was initiated to encourage young Nigerians embrace science subjects as a way of promoting science, technology and innovation.
Onu further assured that the ministry would continue to improve on the programme and ensure active participation of all and sundry.
Earlier, Prof. Robert Borrofice, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology, said the committee was at the headquarters of the ministry to find out what it had done with 2018 budget appropriation as well as its progress on the 2019 budget proposal.
Boroffice said the committee would visit project sites to ensure everything was done in line with the spirit of transparency and the fiscal responsibility.
He further urged the minister to furnish and fully update the committee on its cluster village technology project, waste- to- wealth programme, as well as renewable energy programme.
