SEREDEC Plans Power Plants, Gas Pipelines In South-East

The South-East Regional Economic Development Corporation is set to develop power plants, gas pipelines and other projects in the region.

SEREDEC also said it was working to build railways and healthcare facilities in the five states.

Aside from facilitating the development of infrastructure in the region, it said it was also sourcing for funds to develop the highlighted projects.

The corporation’s Chairman, Bart Nnaji, told journalists in Abuja that SEREDEC was a private sector driven organisation that works in partnership with the state governments of the region.

He said, “The South-East Economic Development Corporation is a totally private sector driven organisation set up by the people of the South East to work on a variety of projects that are really more difficult for a state government to achieve.

“We are working hard to develop power projects, gas pipelines, rail lines and a few other facilities. So it is intended that this organisation supports the state governments in achieving such projects.

“We think it is a good model for developments in the nation and one of the things the organisation does on an annual basis is to organise a summit to look at economic activities within the sub-region and what can be done to see that there is more vibrancy in the economic development of the region.”

The Secretary, SEREDEC, Onyi Nwagbara, said the corporation would facilitate and source for funding for the projects it had identified.

He said, “What we do is to facilitate projects and source for funds for these projects. Thus far we have some projects that we are trying to concentrate on. For example, the rail, gas pipelines and healthcare projects as earlier stated by Prof. Nnaji.

“These projects are all 100 per cent private sector driven. What we do again is that we partner with state governments with respect to the right-of-way for these projects. So we identify projects, facilitate these projects and source for funding.”

On the summit slated to take place in Enugu this month, Nnaji stated that guests from within and outside the South-East would attend the programme.

He said officials from the Investment Summit of the United Arab Emirates had indicated interest to participate.

“We will be looking at the ease of doing business in this year’s summit in order to attract investors into the country. We will look at infrastructure development ranging from rail to gas pipelines to healthcare,” he said.
