Federal University of Technology, Effurun, FUPRE, Delta State, has established FUPRE Center for Corrosion Research, FCCR, to develop a technology for the prevention of corrosion in the country.
Describing corrosion in the country as a problem that is estimated to cost N13.4billion annually, the institution’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, said corrosion was a global problem.
Akpofure, in a statement, said: “The center will focus on corrosion prevention and mitigation technologies that not only have the potential to improve the reliability and safety of just about everything made of steel, but also can save billions of Naira/Dollars in repairs and rebuilding.
FCCR intends to change the discussion on corrosion from being an afterthought to being part of the upfront decision making about an asset and it’s projected life, while also advancing technological solutions.
“Researchers from FUPRE College of Engineering and College of Science and various institutions/centers of academic excellence at the university will be involved with the FCCR, as will experts from other universities.
“The FCCR is seeking government and private funding because corrosion is not a problem exclusive to Nigeria and the center is open to collaborations and support from international institutions and businesses.
