Firm Trains NIMG Staff In Modern Mining Techniques

Employees of the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences are currently undergoing training on the latest mining techniques that would help improve their efficiency and grow the country’s revenue from the sector.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing seven-day training on human capital development for NIMG staff in conjunction with Geocardinal Engineering Services Limited in Keffi, Nasarawa State, the Technical Director, GESL, Adeyemo Titilope, said the essence of the programme was to sharpen the skills of the workers and grow the overall output of the industry.

Titilope said, “The aim of the capacity building programme to employees of NIMG is to enhance their capability to discharge their duties effectively. So we bring experts to train them on how they can perform their work efficiently for the benefit and growth of the institute.

“GESL is an engineering firm and we train people in the mining sector, as well as geoscientists. NIMG is a research-based organisation with different departments that need to be grounded in geology, mining and research. So we are here to widen their scope for them to be able to meet up with their mandate.”

He added, “This is because the law that established the institute made it clear that NIMG as a research-based organisation should be able to train people in mining geology, mining and other related disciplines. This is why we are carrying out this capacity- building training. This is our area of expertise and we’re currently running a similar training in South Africa.”

On the call for the provision of adequate equipment to artisanal miners in order to boost the country’s revenue in the sector, Titilope stated that the World Bank had indicated interest to support the NIMG with facilities that would enhance the performance of miners in Nigeria.

He said, “The Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences has been enlisted by the World Bank to be given equipment for the proper functioning of NIMG. They (NIMG) have been captured in the Presidential Initiative Intervention Fund so that many equipment can be supplied to their lab in order to enable the institute deliver its mandate.”

The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, NIMG, Prof Suleiman Hassan, earlier stated that the Federal Government was not making enough revenue from the mining sector because of the obsolete equipment used by artisanal miners who operate in the industry.
