AIB Reviews Its Regulations To Improve Aviation Safety

The Accident Investigation Bureau has reviewed its regulations in a bid to improve safety in the country’s aviation industry.

The Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, AIB, Mr Akin Olateru at the conclusion of a two-day stakeholders’ meeting for the review, said it was in line with global best practices of regularly updating accident investigation regulations.

He explained that the review of AIB Regulations 2016 became important as it had not been done in many years, so as to improve the industry and prevent accidents through recommendations.

“We need to move the industry forward by constantly reviewing our strategies to ensure we are doing the right thing; we cannot be doing the same thing and expect different results. Aviation is a serious business globally and we owe it to over 180 million Nigerians to do the right thing,” he said.

Olateru stated that based on the successes recorded in the last two years, the AIB and France would sign a Memorandum of Understanding within the next 30 days, for the bureau to help in air accident investigations in Francophone countries within West Africa.

He said the AIB already had an existing partnership with the government of Sao Tome and Principe and in talks with other African countries to help in investigating incidents and accidents in their countries.

The Director-Genera, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Capt. Muhtar Usman, said AIB had made tremendous contributions in improving safety through safety recommendations.

Usman stated that out of a total of 37 safety recommendations that were issued to the NCAA, 29 had been fully implemented, two partially implemented and one yet to be implemented.

He added, “On the remaining five, the NCAA did not agree with the safety recommendations and had provided reasons. Recently, the NCAA had forwarded the status of implementation of the three outstanding safety recommendations to the committee.”
