President Trump announced plans Friday to expand 5G networks, opening up a record amount of new radio frequencies and keeping the US abreast of tech rivals like China.
“We want to be the leader in this, we’re the leader in everything else,” he said at the White House before cracking that the US would next “go for 6,” referring to a 6G network.
“The race to 5G is a race that America must win. It’s a race that we will win,” he said. “But we must not rest, the race is not over.”
The president said 5G would be many times faster than 4G and called it “pretty amazing.”
Trump also said the feds would push to get networks installed first in rural and farm country.
Introducing 5G could enable the type of rapid technical progress unleashed when 4G was introduced, such as the rise of smartphone apps like Spotify and Uber.
The next generation is expected to power self-driving cars and so-called smart cities, the administration said.
Team Trump did not want to create a government entity to implement the 5G program, as China has done.
And Trump touted the private role, saying it saved taxpayers money.
The Federal Communications Commission, which oversees the nation’s communications networks, agrees with the private sector approach.
“I draw the lesson from the development of the wireless industry over the past three decades, including US leadership in 4G. The market, not the government, is the best way to drive innovation and investment. That’s the general approach we’ve taken and it’s proven to be successful,” FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who was also at the event, said recently.
