Intel says it will no longer pursue 5G modems for smartphones following the peace deal between Qualcomm and Apple.
Intel will assess the opportunities for 4G and 5G modems in PCs, IoT and other data-centric devices and will invest in its 5G network infrastructure business.
“In the smartphone modem business it has become apparent that there is no clear path to profitability and positive returns,” says Intel CEO Bob
“5G continues to be a strategic priority across Intel, and our team has developed a valuable portfolio of wireless products and intellectual property. We are assessing our options to realize the value we have created, including the opportunities in a wide variety of data-centric platforms and devices in a 5G world.”
During the Apple-Qualcomm spat, Intel supplied 5G smartphone modems to Apple but they were technically inferior to those from Qualcomm and HiSilicon.
The move follows Intel’s earlier withdrawal from the smartphone apps processor business where it paid customers to use its processors and lost $4 billion a year for several years.
