APWEN, NSE Celebrate First Female Registered Nigerian Engineer

The Association of Professional Women Engineers in Nigeria, APWEN with the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE celebrated the icon of engineering profession Mrs Olutunmbi Joanna Maduka during her 2nd Annual Lecture held at NECA House in Ikeja, Lagos.

The President of APWEN, Engr (Dr) Felicia Nnenna Agubata eulogized Mrs Maduka as the first woman to lead the Academy of Engineering and the first President of APWEN in her speech. She showered encomium on her as a mother and a figure of inspiration to all. In same the vein, the President of NSE Engr. Adekunle Muokolu ably represented by the Vice President, Engr. Felix Ibitoye shared a beautiful memory of how the celebrant discovered him to his path of success in life.

Engr. Agubata further explained that APWEN has gone extra miles to create an impact in society by encouraging the study of engineering among women in Nigeria. She said APWEN is a platform where women engineers can collaborate with women in other profession and that they have affected the lives of primary students of all the geopolitical zones in the country. She mentioned that the association has awarded scholarships to 71 students from primary to university level with the support of NNPC.

In line with APWEN position on qualitative education, the association also constructed ultra-modern science technology laboratories in some schools with the assistance of NNPC.

The occasion was graced by dignitaries from all walks of life among whom where Prof Ibidapo Obe, former Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Mrs Anthonia Titilayo Akinlawon, SAN, Dr Nike Akande, Former Minister of Industry and many other senior engineers were in attendance.
