Ikeja Electric Denied Us Meters After Payment To Charge Arbitrary Bills -Residents

Residents on Adekola Adetoyese Street, in the Arida, Idimu area of Lagos State, have alleged that Ikeja Electric denied them prepaid meters six months after payment.

They told usthat officials of the company suggested that the community opt in for prepaid meters for efficient service delivery and accurate reading of their electricity bills.

The resident said they were told that at least 10 members of the committee must pay a certain amount for the community to be eligible.

The Secretary/Electricity Coordinator, Estate Metering Committee Project of the community, Olaribigbe Boboye, said his committee convinced 18 residents, who paid N30,000 each for the metering project.

According to him, the officers of the IE promised to deliver the meters four weeks after payment.

Boboye added that instead of the company supplying the prepaid meters, they increased their electricity bills.

He alleged that the power company illegally changed their billings from residential to commercial, adding that in April, the company gave him a bill of N18,000.

Boboye added that residents paid for the prepaid meters to be free from estimated billing, noting that the company frustrated their efforts.

“Last October, Ikeja Electric officials came to us and said they wanted to provide our community with prepaid meters once we paid N30,000 on our bills. They added that if we could get 10 persons to pay, they would provide us with prepaid meters. We were able to gather about 18 persons who paid for the meters.

“We were told four weeks afterwards that the meters would be installed in our houses. It is over six months now and nothing has been done about it.

“We have written several letters to them. Each time we call them, they say they will do it. Till now, we have not seen anything,” he said.

we learnt that the community wrote letters to the management of the electricity company on March 28 and April 23, 2019.

The first letter was titled, ‘Unbearable delay in supplying our estate meters five months after payment.’

The second letter highlighted the ‘frustrating expectation’ the company was subjecting the estate residents to.

The Head of Corporate Affairs, Ikeja Electric, Felix Ofulue, said the payment was for a backlog of debts.

He promised to ensure timely delivery of the meters to the estate residents.

“It is just a case of backlog. I have told the guys to see how they could fast-track the metering,” he said.
