Apple’s future iPhones will have a new method for scanning your fingerprint, according to a new report.
Apple’s Touch ID could be returning to the iPhone in 2020, but it won’t be quite as you remember it, a new report has revealed.
Touch ID was the name given to Apple’s fingerprint recognition feature, which allowed iPhone users to unlock their devices, make payments and access sensitive data by touching the Home button at the bottom of the screen.
Face ID is now the default authentication method on the iPhone X, XS, XR and third generation iPad Pro.
In a research note seem by MacRumors , Curtis and his associates predict that Apple’s 2020 iPhones will feature “acoustic fingerprint technology that could allow for full-screen Touch ID”.
This would potentially allow iPhone users to unlock their devices by touching anywhere on the screen.
Apple has reportedly filed for approximately five in-display Touch ID patents since December 2018, but the technology is yet to appear in any of the company’s devices.
Samsung’s latest smartphone, the Galaxy S10 , features an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor under the display, which uses soundwaves to create a 3D map of your fingerprint.
On top of the new Touch ID system, the report notes that Apple’s 2020 iPhones will come with 5G , as well as a 3D sensing rear camera system originally expected in this year’s models.
All of the devices are also expected to come with OLED displays.
