To compete with global technology trends, Vodacom Business Nigeria, has trained secondary school students at the firm’s second edition of Inter-School Robotics Training Workshop in Lagos.
Managing Director, Vodacom Business Nigeria, Wale Odeyemi, said the firm’s aim is to empower the next generation with relevant technical skills that will drive positive change in the Nigerian economy.
He noted that the robotics training is in line with progressing the fourth industrial revolution.
“There has never been a better time to infuse some much needed Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) training in the education sector through the annual Inter-School Robotics Initiative.
“This initiative further demonstrates Vodacom’s support for education at the grass root level to encourage budding technology experts,” Odeyemi added.
Some of the schools that participated in the one-day workshop included Dansol High School, Avi-Cenna School, Holy Child College, Edgewood College, Adrao International School, Rainbow College, Greensprings International School, D-Ivy College, Halifield College and Chrisland College.
As part of the programme, the students were taught how to build, program, and control different kinds of robots as relevant in today’s world. This demonstrated the essential use cases of such technologies in everyday life, ranging from manufacturing to transportation, and even for security.
Participants were also trained on Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and Virtual Reality (VR). Winners of the robotics competition are Edgewood College, Lekki; while Holy Child College, Obalende and ADRAO International School, Victoria Island were first and second runners-up respectively.
Student from Edgewood College, Josephine Aghedo, said the workshop was educative and inspiring. “It has given me a glimpse about what being a computer engineer means and how I can help the world with knowledge gained, thanks to Vodacom for this great opportunity,” he added.
