NCC To Give Research Grants To Universities

In fulfilment of her 8 point agenda, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Prof Umar Garba Danbatta, stated that the ICT innovation forum has become necessary to promote local content with an emphasis in the tech ecosystem. He said this during the maiden edition of Emerging Technologies Research and ICT Innovation Forum held at the University of Lagos with the theme: Developing Nigeria Tech Ecosystem Imperative for Improving Local Content.

He stressed the need for collaboration with private and public industries and to promote local content in ICT by enabling a system where the tech ecosystem can flourish to create a tech hub.

On the efforts of the present administration towards this, he said that the government has made it a policy to find a local solution for industries needs.

At a press statement, NCC Director for Research and Development, Mr Ephraim Nwokonneya revealed that as part of their collaborative efforts, research grants would be given out to universities to conduct research in prone areas that could aid industry growth. He mentioned that 25 kinds of research were going on in universities and that all the commission was doing is to encourage the academia and the private sector.

Other keynote speakers at the event include Funke Opeke, CEO Main One Cable Company, Prof Francis Idachaba, Director of Academic Planning, Covenant University and others.
