But what actually happens when your iPhone gets too hot? Here’s what’s really going on – and what you can do to avoid it.

According to Apple, iPhones work in areas where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F).

Temperatures outside of this range might cause your iPhone to change its behaviour in an attempt to regulate its temperature.

What happens when your iPhone gets too hot?

Using your iPhone in temperatures beyond 35º C (95º F) can have a serious effect on the battery life.

On Apple’s website , it says: “Using an iOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.”

Other changes you might notice include slow charging, a dimming of the display, and a weak cellular signal.

The camera flash will also temporarily be disabled, while performance in graphic-intensive apps will slow.

Additionally, if you’re navigating, the device might show this alert and turn off the display: “Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down.”

Thankfully, navigation still provides audible turn-by-turn directions.

How can you prevent your iPhone from overheating?

If you see the temperature warning screen, there are several ways to cool down your iPhone.

Apple explained: “To resume use of your device as quickly as possible, turn it off, move it to a cooler environment, and allow it to cool down.”

Other ways to cool down your iPhone include:

Separate your phone from other gadgets

– Avoid using charging your iPhone until has had the time to cool down

– Remove any case you may have on your iPhone
