The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency has said it will train 80 personnel this year at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria in safety electronics and engineering services.
The Director of Safety Electronics and Engineering Services, NAMA, Ahmad Faruk, said the first batch of 20 is already receiving training at the college.
He said only properly trained personnel could successfully execute timely system maintenance procedures at communications, navigation and surveillance stations across the country.
He noted that the quality of maintenance and level of competence possessed by the personnel had a direct bearing on training undergone and certification obtained.
He said, “As I speak, we have programmed 80 personnel to be trained at NCAT Zaria this year alone; the first batch of 20 personnel has been in Zaria since last week.
“I urge other civil aviation authorities in Africa to follow the example of Nigeria by providing and facilitating the speedy training and licensing of safety electronics and engineering personnel in their respective countries.”
According to him, untrained safety electronics and engineering is a potential risk to the system, adding that training remains the only weapon against faulty delivery.
Faruk noted that aviation industry growth and change had resulted in safety threats different from those of the past; hence the fundamental objective of the International Civil Aviation Organisation remained safety in the global air transport system.
He noted that the importance of collaboration among aircraft manufacturers, pilots and engineers was to ensure high level of safety in the skies and on the ground.
“Aviation safety depends on technology; hence, safety electronics and engineering are working behind the technology, performing critical safety relevant and risk-related maintenance on a daily basis,” he said.
He explained that there was a need to encourage such personnel so that they could get more recognition at state, regional and international levels.
Faruk said their contributions to the overall safety and efficient handling of air traffic were significant, which warranted their inclusion in Annex 1 to the Chicago Convention.
