Imo State Launches Website After CIAPS E-Governance Rankings

More than a month ago, ‘The Centre for International and Advanced Professional Studies (CIAPS)’ carried out a research that involved the appraisal and ranking of websites in the 36 States of the Federation. The aim of this project was to assess corporate governance from a technology stand-point, hence why the centre used each States ‘websites’. There was a press conference to intimate the public on the findings on the 26th of July, 2019.

States like Kaduna and Delta came first and second respectively, after being scored using ten objective criteria which were Interactivity, Updated, Updates, User-friendliness, Content relevance, Accountability, Policies, Directory, Empowerment and Opportunities and finally Call-to-action. Some states were ranked as average, others fell under the worse category, and then there were States without a website.

There were several major findings from this research, one of which was the fact that some websites were badly made and maintained – having informations and ‘latest news’ dating back as far as 2018 as at the 23rd and 24th of July, 2019, when the research was conducted.

There were also instances of poor interfaces, and missing prompts (call-to-action) in states that clearly needed them, such as those with insurgency and security issues as in Borno State. It was also discovered that some States did not just have poorly made websites – they had none at all, about six States fell under this category (find out more on their website www.ciaps.org). More specifically, Imo State was one of the States found to be without a website. It was a rude shock as the State previously had been involved in spending monies to erect and unveil statues while appointing a ‘Minister of Happiness’. It was clear that this was a case of misplaced priorities and the centre, through their efforts brought the attention of the world to such issues.

In a twist of event however, less than two months after they had been exposed to the world as being poor in terms of e-governance, based on the centre’s standards, Imo State has finally launched their website. Their efforts are commended and the centre urges the other states with outdated website and those without one, to do the needful and tow the parts of Imo State who has retraced their step and gotten some priorities straight.
