Inclusivity In Building Infrastructures

Inclusivity for healthcare, education, gender, job roles, and other sectors, have been propagated and campaigned for in our society. This is usually instigated by groups or sects that feel sidelined or not given opportunities accessible to other categories of people. If they are truly being neglected, policies can either be changed or rules adjusted to the degree that is possible.

The issue of inclusivity when it comes to offices or residential buildings is one that should be paid serious attention, as there are people who are finding navigation through their daily interfacing with such places extremely frustrating and tedious. With the rise in technology and innovations, the journey to 100% inclusion in the industry is much easier and achievable than it has ever been.

Picture a scenario where one on wheelchair tries to access the entrance of a push door in a public building or a heavily endowed person struggles to squeeze into a bathroom stall because it was built too narrow, or a nursing mother attending a conference with a toddler, who needs a diaper change but on getting to the toilet finds no changing boards or closets, leaving her with options to carrying on where she is seated or on the bathroom slabs where wash-basins are placed–both being uncomfortable to mother, child, and/or the participants in the training.

If these experiences sound alien to you, it is thanks to inclusivity in the planning and development of the structures you have entered. In the scenario painted, amenities are not lacking they are just limited to serve certain persons when in fact they should have been made to serve all types of individuals. The issues in play were as a result of an inclusion-knowledge gap in the engineers and architect responsible for its construction.

Simple measures such as the installation of an automatic slide door system, diaper-change closet and building bathroom stalls that are a bit wider or taller to fit all shapes and sizes might be considered unimportant on a wider scale of things but for some people, the difference between a good or an extremely bad day is this factor.

The physically-disabled or impaired individuals we have around also visit banks, churches, supermarkets, and hospitals, but many of these places – especially in the poorly developed countries are without wheel-chair ramps, strategic railing systems, and versatile direction pointers etc. – basic amenities that these individuals require.

These things are often not factored in for a majority of public places or structures and the reverse should be the case; the aim should be zero barriers. Fortunately, most of these solutions do not require immense effort or budgeting as they can be incorporated from the start of the project; all it takes is a simple thought and having an inclusivity-oriented mindset. Inclusivity is not a subject to be taken with levity as the resultant effect on those who fall on the receiving end can be immense.

Architects, engineers, building developers, and other individuals involved in the planning, developing, distribution, and standardization of building projects should ensure that whatever structure being put up takes into cognizance all the various categories of people that would use such places and ensure that the necessary amenities are provided for them.
