Experts Call For Research, Development For Innovation

To drive Nigeria’s quest for innovation and global competitiveness, experts have called for the promotion of research and development in tertiary institutions.

They added that this move would increase the nation’s knowledge base and creativity of the Nigerian youth.

Speaking during the commissioning of Bells Clinic Management system (BCMS), Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jeremiah Ojediran, noted that the country is yet to give research and development the needed investment.

On the BCMS, which was done in collaboration with New Horizon, the VC said the application would ease health record challenges between the institution, students and their parents.

“We have had issues between students and parents on their health billing. The BCMS app would help process and manage the record of the students’ health. Some parents even complain that their child didn’t come for treatment or that they are overcharged. All these would be corrected with the app,” he added.

Adding that the app was a result of the students’ resilience and tech training by New Horizon, Ojediran said he was glad that the students can solve problems around them using technology.

Managing Director, New Horizons, Tim Akano, charged the students to aspire to excel in all they do, as well as using technology to their advantage.

He said: “You are not too young to be successful. Life no longer begins at 40 but continues there. We are now in the digital world, and there, life begins early. Think of what you can create to make money. All the problems in Nigeria are opportunities to make money. Have the concept that every problem is money turned upside down.

“So, remove the phobia. Anybody can do it. You’re in a global world. Identify and solve a scalable problem, and see the world from a new angle.”

Mechatronics Engineering, 300 level student of Bells University, Arogundade Rahmat, said the school clinic was a major concern but said the issue had been solved using technology.

She lauded the school management and New Horizon’s support in birthing the solution. Rahmat added that the app would be improved upon subsequently.
