The Nigerian Society of Engineers President, Engr Adekunle Mokuolu has addressed the council members on the ill-fated Extraordinary General Meeting that ended in chaos on 27th of June 2019 in Abuja for the first time. According to him in a widely circulated letter, he sincerely regrets the unfortunate incident that happened on that day which brought the meeting to an abrupt end. He maintained that he takes responsibility for the protection of lives and properties of those present in the EGM which informed his decision to end the meeting as it was becoming rowdy. My dear Council Members,
I hope this meets you well.
It is with all sense of responsibility that I address Council and members of our great The Nigerian Society of Engineers on the unfortunate circumstances that characterized the proceedings of the Extra Ordinary General Meeting (EGM) which held on 27 June, 2019 at the instance of Council to consider some proposals to the amendment of the Memorandum & Articles of Association, and possibly pass the proposal as Special Resolutions.
I am quite aware of the issues the incidence has generated in some quarters and within some members of the Society, having committed their time and resources towards having a MemArt that will accommodate an all-inclusive participation of members, and the practice of engineering.
I sincerely regret the unfortunate incidence that happened on the said day, and the way and manner the meeting was brought to an end. I take responsibility for the protection of lives and properties of the members present at the EGM, and this informed the decision to call-off proceedings as the level of agitation and rowdiness was getting out of control by the minutes. Therefore, I appeal to members who felt aggrieved or are still aggrieved to sheath their swords for the interest of the Society and the profession.
The events of 27 June though not intended, has indeed opened a new phase in the life of our Society, and will definitely redefine the way and manner we conduct our businesses henceforth. In this regard, I wish to inform Council that I have actually made consultations with some members of our Society on how to cure the defects of 27 June. The feedback from my consultations seems very positive as the upcoming National Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) – Kano 2019, could serve as a window to right the wrongs which occurred on 27 June.
It is on this note that I crave the co-operation of Distinguished Council Members to ensure that we all commit ourselves to ensuring that the AGM on December 5, 2019 in Kano is conducted successfully and devoid of any form of rancor.
It is my assurance and hope that our great Society is going to a higher level.
