China Launches Satellite TV In 1000 Nigerian Villages

Chinese government has installed satellite TV for 1,000 villages across all the 774 local government areas in Nigeria.

The initiative to grant access to satellite Tv to underserved areas of the country, started in 2017. A completion ceremony held in Abuja to present a completion certificate to StarTimes for executing the project was held recently.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Li Yuan, Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government for its cooperation from the start to the finish of the project.

Mr. Yuan said, “China is a reliable ally of Nigeria and will continue to work with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigerians at the grassroots are not forgotten.”

Mr. Tunde Aina, chief operating officer (COO) of StarTimes Nigeria, said the installations would guarantee access to information in the villages.

Mr. Aina said the project was part of effort to get information across to the local communities and that the project which would be maintained by StarTimes for five years in the various villages was a grant from the Chinese government which was implemented by StarTimes.

On his part, Mr. David Zhang, chief executive officer (CEO), StarTimes Nigeria while formally handing over the project, said the 1,000 Digital Television Villages in Nigeria was a significant achievement and a milestone in the access of digital television service in Nigeria.

Mr. Zhang commended the Nigerian government, state governors and officials, as well as the Chinese government for the cooperation, support and guidance extended to StarTimes Nigeria; being the implementation agency for the project.

He said this was not only promoting access to digital television across the country, but also enhancing people-to-people cultural exchange.
