The issue is not that the structure collapse; but, that it’s a university and faculty of engineering. Then, what is the fruit of our education if a slab could not adhere properly for a considerable time in a beautiful structure as this. The government should focus on our education and not paying the foreign folks to work for us….
I believe this structure failed because of poor knowledge….

I really don’t see how this issue affects education in Nigeria. Maybe because it’s an engineering faculty or because it’s unilag but then many other factors could have caused the collapsing which may have happened due to “random causes”
I guess there’s a huge disparity between my and your understanding of the term education.
Being educated means you have the knowledge and can apply it when need be. If you have the knowledge (education) and can’t apply it to solve problems, then what is the difference between an educated and uneducated person?
Failures in building or structures occur due to random causes or factors, as you pointed out earlier. If the structure fails eventually, it means that you didn’t consider all those factors/causes when designing the system. And you can’t help yourself beyond your level of understanding as regards the system. Thus, if you are educated (knowledgeable) enough why can’t you design a system that won’t fail?
Education (knowledge) have lots to do with the collapsed deck slab. If the engineers that designed that structure considered every bit of the design process/factors and also factor of safety, do you think collapse would have been the case?
If our educational system is sound, building structures that won’t fail will be a culture and not an attempt or by mistake. Quality is as a result of good works emanating from your level of understand and not by chance. It’s not an experiment but a practice.
