Solar Energy Can Complement Energy Generation — Awonusi Tobi

Awonusi Tobi, a post-graduate student of the University of Lagos emerged the first place winner at the 16th edition of the Future Energy Conference held in Lagos. Asteven Solar company,  one of the partners of the event organized a solar system assembling competition in which three major winners emerged. Engineer’s Forum had an interview with the Tobi who was selected for his accuracy and timeliness.

How do you feel been the winner of the Solar system installation competition?

I feel very happy and can’t even quantify the level of joy. I am happy and very much hopeful of taking this opportunity by using it to the best of my ability to make out the best in life.

Before this time, have you ever been involved in solar system installation?

Yes, I do training that involves solar power systems. Solar Installation is an area that I want to venture into because the energy auditing is part of solar systems. You have to do the energy auditing before you have your solar panel installed. It is an aspect that would thrive in Nigeria in no time because power has come to stay. Energy is the basis of life, there is nothing you want to do that won’t involve one form of energy or the other. And when you have your source coming from nature, you can rest assured that the cost at some point in time will reduce.Everybody will also have access to clean renewable energy.

How would you rate the nation’s utilization of renewable energy source at the moment?

Yes, when you talk of nations that have tapped into it, you talk of Germany, Asian Tigers and other European countries. Although it is still gathering momentum in Nigeria and we are hopeful that the government will focus on this decision.  This is an aspect that can compensate or complement the energy generated in Nigeria and aid the shortage of electricity. So if the government can tap into this area, they can make the power that would be affordable and clean that is the advantage and edge that solar power has over other alternative sources of energy. Green Energy has no release dangerous gases to the environment.

What do you anticipate in your training school and from your prospective mentors?

I know it is going to be challenging because the solar system space currently is not very encouraging in Nigeria. The learning, I look forward to that, I know it is going to be quite challenging but I would cope because challenges are part of life.

You just won a whooping 2,000,000 Naira worth of solar products how do you intend marketing these products?

What I can say is when I get to that bridge, I will cross it.
