A cybersecurity researcher in Utah has taken modern-day technology into his own hands — literally.
Ben Workman turned himself into a real-life Tony Stark from “The Avengers’ by implanting four computer chips into his body — a Tesla key in his right hand, a magnet in his left, as well as RFID and NFC implants, according to ABC News.
The RFID and NFC chips replace some functionality of a smartphone, meaning Workman can use his hands to control his home’s smart devices. He also programmed one hand with his work badge so he can swipe into the door.
“Anything with home automation I can program into my chips,” he told the network.
The 29-year-old whiz said the process — known as biohacking — is similar to microchipping a pet.
“It hurts for sure,” he said. “It’s a burning pain, then goes away.”
The magnet is bigger than the other implants and causes “a little bit of a sensation when I move my hand,” he said.
And the Tesla key implant, which allows him to open the door with a wave — was a more involved process. It required a 5mm incision with a scalpel across the back of his hand.
“I had to send the valet key to a company called Dangerous Things,” Workman said. “They take the key, dissolve it in acetate, reshape it and then put a medical polymer on it.”
Finding someone to actually do the implants was a different kind of feat. Workman said he was turned away by a doctor, veterinarian and tattoo and piercing parlor before his cousin, a phlebotomist, ultimately helped him with his first two implants.
Workman is studying how implants like his are improving cybersecurity.
“Steal the phone and you unlock the keys to the kingdom,” he said. “To have a phone stolen is a very big deal. Implementation technology is very hard to steal.”
