Over the years and decades, the architectural ecosystem has meandered its way through a plethora of structural expressions – from conservational to minimalistic to vintage to smart buildings to green. Good enough this does not happen in a unidirectional pattern but instead, it is a cycle contingent on many factors.
With the influx and growth of technological advancement, this industry has witnessed major revolutionary developments and innovations. With the aid of digital solutions, buildings have been designed to be sustainable, efficient, and still retain its ‘chic’, a feat that only a few years back could only be imagined, by bold and visionary-minded individuals. Technology opened up a world of endless opportunities for those in this industry to explore, dream, and create the impossible.
Needless to say, the grounds covered are only a fraction of the whole. With an end paving the way to a new beginning, new trends would surface, old trends would be further consolidated and a combination of the two would produce a new angle.
The architecture of the future can change for better or regress for worse but without a shadow of a doubt, the architecture for the future would have to provide solutions that fit the narrative. We do not know what technology could evolve into in the coming years but what we do know is that it is going to be very much in existence and not going any time soon.

In the nearest future, it has been predicted that architectural edifices would turn to other alternatives when it comes to where a building can be erected. A silent stereotype when it comes to constructing buildings has to do with location – you need land and more land. The total surface of the earth completely covered in water is almost 75% yet water bodies in terms of construction only come to mind in one of two situations – luxury or poverty, never as a go-to for the average man.
This is about to change as more and more building design practitioners and forward-thinking communities are already exploring this alternative – take Dubai for instance. This alternative offers some form of recourse to our depleting land resources due to the rapid growth and migration of the human race.
Also, bold statement pieces are going to make a significant ‘come-back’ after years of solid colours and white-washed walls portraying minimalism. This is going to be evidenced in both designs of structures, the materials used, and the overall expression.
Last but not least, a trend that would remain is sustainability in all its glory. When it comes to design and construction, more and more of them would continue to incorporate greener ways and means. More buildings would be made to serve the specific needs of its occupants – buildings would not just be abodes but tools to make life more meaningful.
