Shanghai To Model The Entire City With 5G

THE LIST of digital advances and breakthroughs that will be achievable through the use of 5G goes on and on which excites a lot of government bodies and industrial enterprises.

The fifth-generation wireless technology promises incredible speed, low latency, as well as a greater capacity for data flow.

5G, however, can only be hosted using a multitude of connection points that are within close proximity of each other, making urban areas with dense infrastructure the perfect host.

So, it is no surprise why Asia’s biggest cities are racing to deploy the network on a large scale. Shanghai, for one, is making sure that its city will be empowered by 5G connectivity by the end of the year.

Shanghai’s Mayor Yong Ying aims to leverage both, wired and wireless gigabit networks, to turn into a broadband city.

Since last year, an estimated 12,000 5G network base stations have been set up.

According to the Shanghai Communications Administration, this has allowed coverage in downtown areas, the Hongqiao business district, and the Lingang Special Area.

While speaking at the opening ceremony of the city’s legislative body annual meeting, Yong revealed that in 2020, Shanghai will optimize 5G in order to deploy other advanced solutions like the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, machine intelligence, and big data.

All these capabilities will further fortify Shanghai’s smart city plans and scale cybersecurity measures.

Yong added, “Shanghai will also improve the ‘city brain‘ architecture and build a big data platform that encompasses the entire data life cycle.”

Additionally, 2020 will also see the city boosting capacity for the new generation of information infrastructure and speeding up its smart city development.

To solidify efforts, communication providers and operators must play an active role and help city officials achieve desired targets and meet market demands for 5G connectivity power.

The communication administrations have announced that three of the country’s biggest communication operators have built partnerships with enterprises and scientific research institutions to promote 5G pilot projects with industrial internet and artificial intelligence.

Despite the plans and progress made, Shanghai must ensure that key digital players and industrial leaders will adapt to the dynamic shifts that 5G will bring.

At the same time, other cities in Asia must push forward and promote their plans to leverage 5G to establish themselves as a prominent market prospect in an increasingly competitive digital economy.
