Things Tested By Covid-19

Many inadequacies and inefficiencies have been exposed following the coronvirus outbreak, from economies to policies to systems to institutions, to governance there has been significant failures in these quarters.

Taking a look at China where they were able to put up a 12,000 capacity hospital in no time to accommodate those that were affected by the virus, restrict movement, and enforce lockdowns; all proactive measures, most countries were and have not been able to rise up to the task as well as is required to prevent what China experienced, evidenced in the alarming pandemic stats (death and confirmed cases) in Italy, Spain, and the United States. The USA government in the earlier days was alleged to have referred to the disease as a hoax and it is no rocket science that as a result of that seeming nonchalance, many contingencies that may have been put in place to stop what the country is currently experiencing, have now had to be rushed; a situation of management as opposed to what should have been prevention; same for those other countries. Visa policies for experts and professionals are basically being scraped and inter-country migration is being encouraged from all corners to help combat the increased impact of the coronavirus without barriers of age, race or gender.

In many third-world countries, there are major lacunas in health amenities to educational capacity, you name it, but they have been overlooked for the major part; a monster that has and will come back to bite, with the virus ravaging several countries. In Nigeria for instance, although the numbers have not gotten out of hand, fear already exists in the minds of those who know about the state of things as it relates to healthcare facilities and systems. According to some sources, there are less than 500 ventilators in the whole country; less than a quarter of what is needed to cater to the citizens if the predicted number of infected persons becomes a reality. Without a doubt, it is a cause for worry especially with the populace figures predicted to be infected. This pandemic has simply shown the depravity of the health sector in this country and other countries like it that have ignored doing the needful. It has also tested the capability of health facilities, generally, and it has been brought to light, those who have built a working system and those who have failed to, in this regard.

Money, luxury, travelling, cars, and the likes have also proven to not be the most important thing in life, instead health, food, a place large enough to allow one practice social distancing, family, and breathing, has. The stock market is proof of how fickle economies and capitalism can be, how easily currency, stocks, and companies can lose their value. The clash between Russia and Saudi Arabia led to plummeting prices of oil and invariably the negative hit the global stock market has faced.  People are the ones who buy shares, if the ‘people’ start having doubt and are unsure about certain things as it relates to their investments, they would panic and start pulling out which leads to depreciation of value; all of these once more have been instigated by the outbreak.

Finally, among the things the covid-19 has tested, it has not only revealed shortcomings but some interestingly positive sides too. Talk about the internet, more than ever before the world is being run almost a hundred percent through the online ecosystem. Everyone who owns a device and can do a data subscription is connected one way or the other. People now make a living remotely, survival amenities are now gotten through online channels, and friends are keeping in touch through innovative ways. The amount of people around the world using the internet has shown the power and strength of connectivity and its ability to handle an enormous traffic without crashing or shutting down; a worthy to note observation. In addition, the internet has proven itself to be useful and ever present, no matter what, as opposed to the concerns being raised from many corners, about the internet making the world more disconnected from reality and more connected to the virtual world, it has now proven that sometimes that is what can save us and keep us safe. Many solutions to help with the outbreak have surfaced thanks to researcher being able to still collaborate and share information or ideas despite the fact that they may not be physically present. The internet ultimately, has remained unshakable through the storm that is coronavirus.
