Nigeria’s Death Penalty Via Zoom Blasted As ‘Vicious And Inhumane’

The sentencing of a Nigerian driver to death by hanging via the video conferencing platform Zoom is “cruel and inhumane,” outraged activists say.

In the country’s first-ever virtual conviction, Lagos judge Mojisola Dada handed down the death penalty to Olalekan Hameed Monday for the 2018 murder of his employer’s 76-year-old mother, according to BBC News.

“The sentence of this court upon you, Olalekan Hameed, is that you be hanged by the neck until you be pronounced dead … This is the virtual judgment of the court,” the judge said.

But local and international activists are demanding that authorities expunge the conviction, with The Human Rights Watch slamming virtual death sentences amid the coronavirus crisis as “inherently cruel and inhumane,” according to the outlet.

Hameed had pleaded not guilty to killing Jolasun Okunsanya in December 2018. It wasn’t immediately clear if he plans to appeal the sentence.

Zoom’s popularity has exploded during the coronavirus pandemic.
