Equatorial Guinea Awards Contract For Gas Mega Hub Development

Marathon Oil, EG LNG, and Equatorial Guinea’s Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons have contracted UK company Gas Strategies to develop a gas master plan

Marathon Oil, EG LNG, and Equatorial Guinea’s Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons (MMH) have contracted UK company Gas Strategies to develop a gas master plan.

The work will be part of the development of Equatorial Guinea’s planned Gas Mega Hub: the program started in April 2019, when Noble Energy and its partners signed definitive agreements for monetization of gas from the offshore Alen field.

The MMH hopes the offshore gas mega-hub will lead to development of presently stranded gas fields across the Gulf of Guinea by maximizing existing infrastructure at Punta Europa on Bioko Island.

Facilities at the complex such as EG LNG and Marathon’s methanol plant have relied on gas feedstock from the offshore Alba field, but declining output means that more gas is now needed from other fields in the region.

Under the development, Punta Europa will be pitched as a gas processing center for all stranded gas fields in the Gulf of Guinea, including deposits offshore neighboring Cameroon and Nigeria.

Depending on the take-up, it could lead to the construction of additional liquefaction capacity on Punta Europa.
