The Technical Committee of Standards Organisation of Nigeria adopted 16 number standards on Electromedical Equipment and systems recently. Speaking
on behalf of the DG, Barrister Osita Aboloma, the Director of Standards, Mrs Chinyere Egwuonwu said that the technical session was urgent and necessary in view of the current global Covid 19 pandemic. She mentioned that there are many innovative medical equipment being produced as a result of the Covid 19 in the country and so the need to standardize them in line with global standards.
The President Nigerian National Committee of IEC, Dr Ayodele Esan also spoke in same vein acknowledging the need for the committee to rise above board and meet the challenges of the New Normal. The Electrical Group Head, Engr Cherry Achema on behalf of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria commended everyone for their time, resources and expertise deployed in one of the standards development processes with respect to Essential Electromedical equipment and systems. He stated that “You all did noble and the SON will take it aggressively from there to ensure their Gazette. Implementation and enforcement will follow.
I’m directed to let you know that, the journey just began and that you shouldn’t be tired yet as more works are expected to follow soonest.

The technical committee has stakeholder members which cut across manufacturers, consumers, institutions and dealers.
It will be recalled that the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) governing council recently approved 168 new standards for publication and dissemination to various sectors of the economy.
According to Engineers’ Forum, the session was held through online platform.
