Microsoft Unveiling A Giant, Foldable Phone

Microsoft plans to re-enter the smartphone market next month with a giant, foldable phone that’s priced at $1,400.

The Surface Duo — which features two 5.6-inch OLED displays connected by a hinge in the middle — is the thinnest folding phone in the world, Microsoft claims. Following nearly a year of teases since the initial design of the device was revealed in October 2019, Microsoft has made its first smartphone since 2017 available for preorder.

Unlike Samsung’s first attempt at a folding smartphone, which was plagued by issueswith its folding display, Microsoft has no flexible elements in its screen. The two displays are designed to work independently from one another, rather than serving as two halves of the same screen. When the phone is folded, it is only 0.05 inches thicker than the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The Surface Duo is Microsoft’s first phone running Android, after it shuttered its line of phones featuring Windows software. While $1,400 generally gets you a smartphone with at least two cameras, the Surface Pro features just one, which can capture 11-megapixel photos as well as 1080p video.

The Duo is available for preorder on Microsoft’s website, as well as at AT&T and Best Buy. Microsoft earlier this summer announced that it would be closing almost all of its physical stores, citing a “strategic change” for its retail business as sales increasingly shift online.

Microsoft said it would “reimagine” the physical spaces at its four high-profile Microsoft Experience Centers.
