It comes as a shock to hear the chairman of Foxconn saying that world markets will split into two spheres – one governed by American rules and the other by Chinese rules.
This is going back to 1945 at Yalta when “from Stettin on the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an Iron Curtain descended across the continent.”
That set the scene for 44 years of competition between free enterprise and communism.
This is what lies ahead of us now.
It sounds bonkers. No one sensible could want such a future.
At such a time you would expect the leaders of the international institutions – the UN, WTO, EC etc – to start speaking out and galvanising public support for a unified worldwide economic and trading system.
People want peace, prosperity and security but there seem to be very few leaders out there promoting these objectives.
