Wasted Energy To Useful Energy For Motorists On Highway In Edo State Nigeria: Speed Breaker To The Rescue (Ref. CS0076)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to design and construct a small scale model of a speed breaker electric power generator by harnessing the kinetic energy from vehicles to generate electric power using Ikpoba Hill, upper mission extension in Uteh community, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria as a case study. In this paper, the process of conversion of kinetic energy to electrical energy using a movable speed breaker mechanism and shows that it can produce adequate amount of power for streets lights and traffic lights is demonstrated. A small scale model of the speed breaker generator was designed and then constructed using a flywheel, battery, inverter, spring, the rack and pinion system and a DC motor. It was constructed in such a way that little applied pressure by hand on the speed breaker caused generation of electrical power. The results from the paper indicated that a total of 65×150W streetlight could be installed along the highway thereby adding aesthetic to the city at night in addition to providing source of light to commuters along the way thereby reducing the burden of municipal lightning on the appropriate authority.
