Toshiba Now In Danger

It would be a sad thing to see another of the great engineering names disappear.

The Tokyo Shibaura Electric Company, which dates back to 1875 and abbreviated its name to Toshiba in the 1970s, is being pursued by a private equity company.

The last time the financial community got his hands on a Toshiba unit – the memory business – it suffered the humiliation of being stripped of its name and re-branded to sound like a disease – Kioxia.

That was an ignominious fate for an operation which had the finest CMOS process in the world in the 1980s and invented flash memory.

Can one now realistically expect future great achievements from the memory engineers when pulled in different directions by the various interests of its corporate owners in the US, Korea and Japan?

One suspects that local management will do as they’re told by the coterie of financial interests which now own them.

As for the ret of Toshiba, the private equity bidder, CVC, is already talking of bringing in purchasing partners. Toshiba’s bones risk being picked over by multiple predators looking to glean what they can.

The omens for Toshiba are not good because Toshiba’s current CEO used to be employed by CVC.

The best hope for Toshiba staying independent may be the Tokyo financial regulator prohibiting the takeover,

If he doesn’t, the Toshiba Tower on the banks of Tokyo Bay – for years a symbol of engineering achievement – will likely be replaced by a grim office block with a ghastly new name hung round its neck.
