Engineering Academy To Promote Research For Industrial Development

The President, Nigerian Academy of Engineering, Alex Ogedegbe, has said that the academy will promote engineering research that will boost industrial development in the country.

He spoke during a virtual public lecture organised by the academy on ‘The strategic role of engineering in containing COVID-19 pandemic’.

“The academy is committed to developing thought leadership papers for the development of engineering in Nigeria, promote innovation in industries and tertiary institutions through research, design, and fabrication a well as competitions across the broad areas of engineering needs in Nigeria and linking such innovations with industry,” he said.

He said the modernisation of university’s curriculum was an area that the academy had been passionate about and was reaching out to engineering regulators such as the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria to improve the curriculum.

Ogedegbe said the academy picked the topic of the lecture in view of the current challenges of COVID-19 globally and selected the speaker based on his vast wealth of experience in the engineering profession.

The guest lecturer from the University of Delaware, United States of America, Prof. Babatunde Ogunnaike, said that engineering profession was dedicated to translating scientific knowledge into useful solution to problems.

He said engineering must keep the society functioning at steady state as well as rise to the occasion to tackle novel problems when necessary.

Engineering contribution to COVID-19 global response included understanding the pandemic through data acquisition, modeling, analysis and clarification, he said.

According to him, the profession also played a prominent role in slowing the spread of the virus, testing and diagnostics as well as in rapid vaccine development, manufacture and distribution.

He described Nigerian scientists as worthy assets to be nurtured, adding that the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the potential, talents, and creativity of the scientists.

The pandemic had opened up the immense talents and creativity of Nigerian scientists and engineers and if the current momentum was supported, the next few years could be incredibly exciting, he said.

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was the special guest of honour observed that the pandemic had brought to the fore, the relevance of biomedical engineers, computer and technology engineers and Internet facility.

He said the state government had seen strong collaboration between the government and engineers in the development of the state.
