NESTEC 2021 PAPER: Solar Energy As A Means Of Improving Electricity In Nigeria

ABSTRACT

The rapid changing of technology and related human activities leads to tremendous increase of energy used. There have been a lot of efforts to meet the global demand of this energy used, 90% of global energy supply in Nigeria totally depends on fossil fuel, hydropower and other conventional energy resources. Despite all these, energy is not stable. The power sector is essential in a developed economy, and to develop Nigeria’s economy there must be increase in the power generation. The effect of excessive combustion of fossil fuel to generate energy has contributed to negative environmental consequences such as global warming and environmental pollution. Energy from the Sun is on the promising alternative energy resources because of its availability in almost every part of the world. Nigeria receives lots of sunshine all year round due to the geographical location. Research has it that on the average, each square meters receives about 2000 KWH annually, it is practically limitless, will not be exhausted in lifetime with low cost of production. Technology has been able to convert the sunlight to electricity with the help of solar panels and some accessories with no environmental hazards. It is anticipated that the reform method theorize in this paper will bring economic growth and transformation to the nation’s energy supply.

    1. Through the help of solar panels, charge controller, inverter
Solar energy can improve electricity due to renewable energy source which is the sun which we enjoy everyday. So we use the help of solar panels, collect the energy emitted from the sun and distribute this energy collect to our home appliances with the help of solar panels charge controller, inverter and battery banks

  3. Solar energy is the best power source especially for African countries because for a whole lot of reason especially its need for little maintenance. One The main issue we have in African countries is maintenance.
The problem now is the cost price of getting a complete solar set which needs to be solved to enable it’s massive use in the community.
In my own opinion this is where the federal government comes in to make the solar system set readily available to the people at a relatively cheap price and payment plans and also enable installments in order to facilitate it’s use.

    1. Yes, solar energy can improve the electricity in Nigeria, because of it a renewable energy source, the sun and its supply is nearly endless along at the solar panels are installed, energy start generating and can be distributed immediately. We enjoy sunshine all round the year so therefore we can generate and distribute energy also all around.

  6. Solar energy is resourceful and if generated in abundance, might even wipe out the need of over head lines for good. Yes it has low maintenance cost but last I checked, to generate useful energy in a household through solar power would cost a lot which means it would only be available to a tiny percentage of the rich people in the country. This is the only problem I feel solar energy generation in Nigeria is faced with

  8. Electricity is key to the development of nations, as industries, small businesses, and government institutions rely on it for sustainable growth and development. I think
Solar energy Is the best solution to our present poor supply of electricity in Nigeria, because it’s a free source of energy from the sun, & here in Nigeria we’re blessed with sun 🌞.
The sun provides us with more energy than we could ever use, and no one can monopolise the sunlight. I am very sure if we can invest more on solar energy it will save us alot of money

    1. Definitely it can. Nigeria receives lots of sunshine all year round due to the geographic location, each square meters receives about 2000 KWH annually, which can produce a sustainable energy resources.it is practically limitless, will not be exhausted in lifetime with low cost of production.

  11. Can we have anything in the future that we can call a solar power plant?

    0

    0
    1. Yes we can have. there will be a thousand of solar power array, connected, to generate lot of energy. Which can be distributed for both commercial or industrial use

      2

    1. Nigeria receives lots of sunshine all year round because of the geographical location. The sunlight can be converted to electricity with the help of solar panels and some accessories with no environmental hazards. Solar is used to collect the energy emitted and each square meters receives about 2000 KWH annually. So therefore we can have a solar power plant where we connect solar panels arrrays, with a solar charge controller, batteries bank, and inverter, Which convert dc from the panels to ac. And we can distribute this energy for use

      1

      0
      1. The sun we receive all year round as you put it ISN’T a sustainable source of energy. Neither is it reliable all year round.

        If NO, then convince me!

    1. If well maintained, we can have a long lasting power supply of about 20-30years

      2

  15. Do u think solar energy can fuel the whole world?…

    3

    0
  16. Yes we can especially in Nigeria we can generate as much as energy as we wanted. Some developed countries such as Canada USA and many more has adopted this solar energy system to produce electricity and heat. In the United States of America, about 7.7 Giga watts of solar energy installed in the country, this power generated is more than enough to provide electricity for 14.5 million household including industries.

  17. This is a lovely essay. I really took my time to get enlightened but I have a conflict with solar energy for a long time now and would need to be cleared properly

Solar energy, convince me sir is not an energy that’s practically sustainable in a society like Nigeria.

Over time, the solar panels themselves (that don’t even last) will become wastes

Solar panels can work effectively ( carrying many loads) when panels upon panels are laid, mind you, it is accumating too many space

Solar panels sir, I would want to be convinced is not the need for the country at this point.

The primary fuel which is the sun is a limitation to stable electricity, don’t you think?

  18. Over millions years now sun as be giving us natural light and we continue to be. Sun is one of a renewable source of energy which are naturally replenished. So while wasting the brightness everyday, when we can use it to generate electricity to improve our economic growth
Annually we can generate an energy 0f about 1500-2000kwh. About the accumulation of space it can be installed on the roof top of a building. For example in a house with a load of 3.5w. The solar installation will be installed to match the house load. So therefore we can install solar panels on the roof. And we can also have a solar power plants also to generate more electricity.

    2

    0
  19. Yes, many establishments and homes have started using it and lots more are still intending using it but the cost of installing is on the high side.
Can your research look into what can be done to make the cost reduce like trying a less expensive accessories or gadgets.

    1

    0
    1. Yes. The cost is too much because it is installed individually. The government can have a solar power plant and start generating electricity. Which will not have much cost individually

      1

      0
  20. I feel like with help or availability of solar panel, many homes does not lack electricity again nowadays.

But for everybody to enjoy this …..I think the cost price of every devices or gadgets needed to make this work out should also be reduced since it’ll benefit to all……It’s amazing tho.

    1

    1. Yes. The cost is too much because it is installed individually. If our government can implement to have a solar power station.

  21. Nice write up
Don’t you think solar will be more effective in the northern part of Nigeria then the other part ?

And again what other way can we place our solar panels apart from placing it on top of our roof

    1

    0
    1. We can have a ground installation but it will a occupied space. The best place is to install on the roof if we are installed individually

      1

      0
        1. Yes. We can improve our power generation with solar energy. Power generation in Nigeria is not sufficient for industrial and commercial uses.

          1

          0
    2. Solar energy can be effective but high temperatures also affect solar panels power output. All we all need is the brightness and we can get it there also.

      2

  22. Interesting research sir.

I’d like to ask, considering the current state of the local economy, how can solar energy generation be possible for the low to average earning Nigerian? Considering the fact that a unit of about eight solar panels with one 5KVA inverter and four 200AH batteries can cost as much as N1,400,000 (1.4 million naira).

    2

    0
    1. The cost of solar energy is much due to individual installation. Let talk hydroelectric also, a renewable source like solar energy, you can’t set up a hydroelectric power station even though you have a dam or river at the back of a house. You can’t set up a hydroelectric power plant even the primary source is available but for it to produce it has an high cost. Most renewable source of energy have high cost of production. If our government can help the country create a solar power plant where we can generate lot of energy not individuals anymore. The cost won’t be high. Energy meter will be installed in different house to caretaker the load of the house. We can enjoy electricity at least 16 hours in a day

  23. Hey Adedeji, that’s a good time spent and as a climate change activist I love your paper, but this innovation is already existing in Nigeria. MTN particular are already solving this problem with the Luna electricity project. What good news do your paper presents?

    0

    0
    1. Most MTN luna electricity only deals with light and charging of phone, professionals like carpenter who use different tools in work shop. MTN luna can’t provide enough energy to use e.t.c even Barber clippers used in salon MTN luna cant provide enough electricity for maximum production. MTN luna electricity can’t help the situation. My good news is to minimize the use of fossil fuels for electricity and use the natural resources to get light. If the government can improve the electricity by creating solar energy plant. Solar energy plant will improve electricity

    1. Well done dear. It is has been proven that solar is working in this day Nigeria.
There are some limitations though like fund, safety and space.. but all in all it’s a good read.

  25. Wow, that’s a good report
I wish our government can read this.

  26. Solar energy is reliable
I hope the government can stick to this
    It’s a good project

  27. Solar is good source of energy
Bit it expensive, how did can it be for everyone

    0

    0
    1. To start up any energy generation is expensive. Having dam or river does not make it easy to start hydroelectricity. Equipment and accessories are expensive to be able to generate electricity. So as having sunshine everyday, which is the primary source, equipment are still needed. So we can generate electricity in a large quality and distribute it to people at a low rate to meet their demands.

      0

      0
  28. I think solar energy is not expensive and it easy to maintain, it also reduces combustion(discharge of carbon4oxide)which damages our today society
So it also a safer means of electricity generating

    1

    0
  29. How can we have this power generation in my area, because about 6years now, we did not have electricity. I really need your help solving this power generation problem

    0

    0
    1. Solar energy is renewable source if energy which depends on sun for generation. So we need accessories for this to generate electricity which includes solar panels which is place outside to generate energy from the sun(DC). From there we need solar charge controller, batteries for storage, inverter which is very important, it converts the DC generated from the sun to AC which is mostly used at home.

      1

      0
  30. Can this solar energy actually gives out energy like hydroelectric, because I wonder how solar panels, batteries and inverter be able to feed the house

    0

    0
  31. Solar energy can produce enough energy to feed the house. Mostly people that installed solar system individually, just want the basic appliances to be on the solar system such as bulbs, fan, TV and charging of phones and laptops. So majority taught solar is meant for those appliances alone. Solar energy is capable of supply electricity to the whole appliances in the house. it just depends on the load on the solar system and what the solar system can be able to supply.

    1

    0
  32. Good writeup. If we can have all this renewable source of energy. Especially this solar energy generation. We won’t have power shortage. Some areas don’t have electricity at all. So having these power source of supply we definitely go a long way.

    0

    0
  33. Thanks. It also reduces the use of fossil fuel and reduce environmental hazard.

    1

    0
  34. This is a good report. How can poor people enjoy this power source because of the expensives

    0

    0
  35. Any power generation are expensive, but the primary source is always available. The way we can distribute power supply to the needy is by having a power plant i.e. a solar power plant generate lot of energy and supply it to them.

    1

    0
    1. Yes is very much reliable. Solar energy can produce enough energy for usage both commercial purposes or domestic purposes. Each square meter of a solar panels generate electricity of about 2000kilowatts per hour in a year. So you will generate sufficient electricity

      1

      0
  36. In which way did solar energy reduces environmental harzards

    0

    0
    1. Solar energy does not need fossil fuel to generate electricity, which course environmental hazards. All equipment for generating solar energy is solar panels, solar batteries for storage, inverter and solar charge controller

      1

      0
  37. Good report. Solar energy can help in stability of electricity and ensure low environmental hazard.

    0

    0
    1. Yes, it can help in stabilizing electricity in Nigeria

      1

      0
  38. Good report, during the rainy season especially june/July can we still get enough energy to industies and household because during that season sunlights drops down

    0

    0
    1. Sure. We can get enough energy, during dat period energy demands reduced. During the raining season the brightness will not be as much but at least during periods we still generate energy as much as 3.5-4kwh per day. We can still serve electricity both commercial and industrial

      1

      0
  39. Solar energy is one of the pure form of energy and it would help in the situation of Nigeria electricity nice write up you deserve the medal!!!!

    0

    0
  40. Solar energy is resourceful yes
But relating to large building like factories and companies are you saying I should spend more money on panels and battery ?

    0

    0
  41. It is better to get solar panels than batteries. Most companies work during the day, and the solar panels can produce enough energy for the devices used in the company without batteries. Battery are more expensive because it is used to stored energy. It is not necessary to get batteries at all. May advise is to get moresolar panels and few batteries

    1

    0
  42. Good report. Can the solar energy produce a sustainable energy for our country?

    0

    0
    1. Yes. Solar energy generate 3-5kilowatts per hour. Enough energy can be produced as long as the sun is shining.

      0

      0
  43. Good report. I hope this can work out in this country

  45. “Technology has been able to
convert the sunlight to electricity with the help of solar panels and some accessories with no
    environmental hazards.”

What are the possibilities of recycling the PV panels without severe impacts on the environment?

    2

    0
  46. The possible way of recycling PV panels without severe impact on the environment after a long life span use is by breaking down the solar panel into major which includes
    1. Metal frame
    2. Solar cell
    3. Glass sheets which covers the top of the solar cell
    4 wires
Therefore, breaking of the glass sheet in to small partcles for process( bottling company or glass company) or use the glass as window in a building can be the solar cell, wires and various metals or alloys can be mixed together to form a glass cullet, which is used in building materials. Or the best way is to contact the solar installer for properly recycling
