ABSTRACT
Security is vital for the socio-economic development and sustainability of any nation. Currently, militancy, Boko Haram crisis, Fulani herdsmen, cow herders, local farmers’ clashes, and the heightening wave of kidnapping sums up the current state of security in Nigeria. Poor data management techniques on the part of government agencies have stalled various government efforts targeted towards changing the status quo. Leaked strategies, poor speed of data gathering, and processing have been prevalent as shown by several failed or near-miss intervention missions. This paper presents and discusses the potential role of AI technology; (machine learning, big data, deep learning, etc.) as an efficient tool for detecting, preventing, and curbing insecurities in Nigeria. Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have shown increasing promise concerning information gathering and analysis. AI can optimize time and source leakage of laid down strategies; factors that are plaguing the Nigerian security agencies. Possible challenges that may hinder the implementation of AI technology in curbing insecurity in Nigeria are also highlighted and potential solutions are discussed.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE-AS A TOOL FOR COMBATING INSECURITY IN NIGERIA
Very well spent time Ugochukwu, that’s interesting to know but I doubt if AI could solve the problem of insecurity in Nigeria if the federal government don’t support. The government are the sole problem of such. Little or no laws are taken serious. Mind you we have AI installed in federal offices but snake swallowed our money. Probably they turned off the power to make the news. I beg you center on how the system will have zero control on the AI systems.
Thanks so much for your comments! But one thing you should know, trying new techniques when it comes to security issues in Nigeria, should be welcome wholeheartedly! In as much as you don’t trust the Federal Government with the use of Artificial Intelligence to curb insecurity in Nigeria, that doesn’t mean it can’t be a tool in solving these age-long security challenges!
Even the Bible let us know ‘ my people perish for lack of knowledge that’s right, knowing artificial intelligence can deliver us from these disastrous consequences caused by my insecurity in Nigeria will go a long way in solving it, there are steps we must take because we are the government ourselves;
The first thing first is by creating awareness, like I’m doing on this platform.
Then agencies; DSN, RAIN, DSS should try to learn from other countries; USA, China, etc. On what steps they used in combating insecurity and how they became successful, and likewise, adopt the same method in our country.
But if we restrict ourselves because of what we feel or think about the federal government, the security issues will get worsen just like we see in papers, and it will finally make the country inhabitable for you, me, and everyone living in it.

The DSS or DSN or any other paramilitary setup take orders from the federal government. They don’t act independently, so the buck still returns to the table of the government. Curbing insecurity goes beyond the table of the scientist, it depends more on the minds of the ruling council.
Again, AI has a lot of disadvantages. In circumstances involving kidnapp or robbery, it’s practically impossible to know all possible events and hence program a robot with responses to every one of them. Human creativity is needed. No matter how intelligent or advanced an AI is, it’s still limited to the set of instructions uploaded by its programmer and I don’t think such should be trusted with respect to matters of life and death.
Wow! Nice insight concerning the topic, I would love to see more of this. But judging from your comment it shows, you feel the Government is pleased or are the ones causing the eye saw especially when it comes to security in Nigeria, which I stand to correct you on that, one thing you should know is that the joy of every leader is to see his/her subject, been free from any challenges what so ever and not to aggregate it.
Artificial Intelligence might have not gained its full ground in Nigeria, this is because of what you think and also what others do think concerning it. This thing is a thing of the mind, surely artificial intelligence has been helpful to countries like; Germany, US, etc. If we are positive towards it, it will do likewise for us. Or it might not yet be implemented in Nigeria because of the Government’s ignorance towards it, when I say ignorance I didn’t necessarily mean they’ve not had about the word AI, but I mean maybe they don’t know how it works, how the fund it needs, etc. Thanks to bodies like DSS, DSN… who has a part to play in bringing awareness to the Government, not restricting it to the bodies alone we as citizens need to also make efforts in making the ruling leaders, see what good AI has in sort of us; through conferences, social media, public publications..
Sure you’re right when you say AI has disadvantages but mind you, there is nothing good that doesn’t have disadvantages but one thing still stands, knowing the disadvantages, will help to prepare to counter it, notwithstanding, looking at the potentials of AI; through AI clues or footprint can be detected and trace to the perpetrators… I know you know how helpful that could be.
I could go on and on explaining what good AI has in bestow for us, but first I would love you to be positively minded towards it.

Let me give you guys an instance..
Last year I took a break from schooling and I applied for a job in this Company I wouldn’t want to disclose the name, I work only night shift and so I got used to the happenings at night… Every damn day we hear cases of missing phone and all kind of attrocities and then I ask an old staff who happens to be my colleague why are there not surveillance camera at every vital position in this Company and he told me that the big bosses themselves ask that the surveillance camera be removed that it’s not needed at that position…
So the thing is,this big guys at the top knows what they do behind and they wouldn’t want their own teeth to bite them…
The only solution is this, the AI should be implemented with a trusted agency behind it

First of all, before the government can get the resources needed to implement AI, they need to understand the benefit we stand to gain if we adopt it, also the government can collaborate with Companies that deal in AI in Nigeria.
Sure we can get all the help locally, base on the present happening I can’t give an 100% to that but IT companies like DSN, RAIN, etc. are operating in Nigeria in the production and collection of data, for the excellent operation of AI.

I totally agree with your write up but I think we should solve the problem of corrupt leaders first; judging from the End Sars/ Lekki toll gate massacre, we all know that a group of people were authorize to dismantle the CCTV and this AI (robots) we are talking about will not just work on it own, it will in one way or the other be controlled by humans; don’t you think it may be manipulated ?

Facebook has a facial recognition research project called as DeepFace. DeepFace, is now very nearly as accurate as the human brain. DeepFace can look at two photos, and irrespective of lighting or angle, can say with 97.35% accuracy whether the photos contain the same face.
The DeepFace software, developed by the Facebook AI research group in Menlo Park, California, is underpinned by an advanced deep learning neural network. A neural network, as you may already know, is a piece of software that simulates a (very basic) approximation of how real neurons work. Deep learning is one of many methods of performing machine learning; basically, it looks at a huge body of data (for example, human faces) and tries to develop a high-level abstraction (of a human face) by looking for recurring patterns (cheeks, eyebrow, etc). In this case, DeepFace consists of a bunch of neurons nine layers deep, and then a learning process that sees the creation of 120 million connections (synapses) between those neurons, based on a corpus of four million photos of faces.
Once the learning process is complete, every image that’s fed into the system passes through the synapses in a different way, producing a unique fingerprint at the bottom of the nine layers of neurons. For example, one neuron might simply ask “does the face have a heavy brow?” — if yes, one synapse is followed, if no, another route is taken. This is a very simplistic description of DeepFace and deep learning neural networks, but hopefully you get the idea.

Speaking of security in a developing country like ours, one great way to get insight as to how to handle it, is to look at how the developed ones have combatted and are combating theirs. *Use good data sets. We the Developers will build AI using accurate, fair, and representative data sets. Where possible, developers will build AI algorithms that will audit and ensure the quality of other algorithms.
*Give users control. Users should know when their data is being used, whether AI is being used to make decisions about them, and whether their data is being used in the creation of AI. They will also be given a choice to consent to such data use.
*Reduce algorithmic bias. They’ll be a guarantee that data sets are broad and inclusive when “teaching” AI. Algorithmic bias present challenges most commonly for women, minorities, and groups (e.g., individuals with vocal impairments, elderly) that comprise only a small portion of the technology workforce.

Artificial Neural Networks(ANNs), which is simply called Neural Networks (NNs) are computing systems inspired by the biological neural networks that constitute animal brains
An ANNs is based on a collection of connected units or nodes called artificial neurons, which loosely model the neurons in a biological brain. Each connection, like the synapses in a biological brain, can transmit a signal to other neurons. An artificial neuron receives a signal then processes it and can signal neurons connected to it. The “signal” at a connection is a real number, and the output of each neuron is computed by some nonlinear function of the sum of its inputs. The connections are called edges. Neurons and edges typically have a weight that adjusts as learning proceeds. The weight increases or decreases the strength of the signal at a connection. Neurons may have a threshold such that a signal is sent only if the aggregate signal crosses that threshold. Typically, neurons are aggregated into layers. Different layers may perform different transformations on their inputs. Signals travel from the first layer (the input layer), to the last layer (the output layer), possibly after traversing the layers multiple times.

Okay, answering your question I will say Artificial intelligence, is a powerful tool that can resolve insecurity in Nigeria optimally. What I intend and how I intend in solving insecurities in Nigeria using Artificial intelligence;
Firstly, I will get numerous data on insecurity occurrence from past experience; this data can be fingers print, etc. of the coverage, where the incident occurs. Then I will also try to retrieve items that can help me trace the culprits. Reliable data is very crucial to run successful programs using a programming language (python, C++, etc.) that will detect the culprits.
Secondly, if the culprits have been detected, I will program a drone to locate and kill the culprits (most especially the leader). Just like in the case of Osama bin Laden in the 9/11 attacks.
Thirdly, we live in a technology era, where a lot can be done through the phone. I will build a site, which will send notifications to the users, if they find themselves in endangered places, and aid them by reporting to security personnel close by and this could be done on the user’s phone.
In conclusion, insecurities have posed so much anxiety among citizens in this country, and have paralyzed the economy of this country. If the U.S.A, China, etc. can use AI to defeat insecurity in their country, Nigeria can also defeat insecurity using AI. I will be glad to help my country achieve this, even though have not make any headlines in it, but I am certain in the nearest future I will do so.

Maybe you identify an insecurity problem and suggest how AI can be deployed to address it. Then another insecurity problem with an AI solution to address it.
