ABSTRACT
Agriculture is a critical element that is to be considered for the development of a country, fresh water is one of the key requirements for successful agriculture, technological irrigation is an artificial way of watering the soil to promote growth of farm products. In the present day Nigeria, due to the increase in population, there have been food and water scarcity. So to avoid this problem we have to promote the agriculture sector. But water wastage is more in this sector in the form of water logging while watering the agricultural fields through irrigation. Therefore, this paper proposes a smart irrigation system for the proper water supply in the fields. This paper deals with a smart irrigation system which automatically senses the moisture content of the soil and decide whether irrigation is needed or not and how much water is needed for soil. This system uses Arduino microcontroller. Implementing this will thereby eradicate the need of manpower and conserve the time and also save a large amount of water.

Artificial Irrigation in most farmlands are done by switching on taps to run continuously without actually knowing when the soil is fully moist or when the soil has reached it’s required level of water saturation, with the smart irrigation system proposed in this paper, it is possible to know the soil moisture requirements of a plant and then when that requirement is reached the pump stops supplying the soil with water thereby conserving water and not over watering the plant(water logging). Plants like Lima beans, pole beans and corn are not very tolerant to waterlogging irrigation.

1.)Boosting the agricultural sector in Nigeria is believed to reduce the unemployment ratio in the country, Mr Thomas A (2014) said A survey of recent scholarly work suggests that a relationship exists between terrorism and the extent of youth unemployment in target countries. This goes to show that by improving the agricultural sector there will be decrease in terrorism due to employment opportunities and farmers would be safe.
2.)Second way this would safe lives of farmers is that, the smart irrigation system can be controlled online anywhere, therefore farmers can irrigate their crops without physical presence on the farmland. Terrorist attacks on farmers are known to mostly occur during their farming activities so if farmers are not present during farming activities then no terrorist can harm them.

This paper is well written and it touches the angle that Nigerian citizens and Government should effectively engage, in order to win the future war of economy stability as fuel demand is drastically decreasing (Nigeria’s primary production). Food demand will reach a pinnacle level as population growth is exponentially scaling upward.

Am flabbergasted at this piece, such a nice innovation, I hope this system can be implemented in large scale form. The problem is that what if the system is stolen because u said the system don’t need physical presence?

Actually ma’am the system is still a prototype and have only been simulated using a computer, for security purposes other technological ideas can be added on it, for example CCTV cameras and infrared sensors can be added to make the system more secured.
But the reason I didn’t add that to my paper is because I didn’t want to make it more complex. Thank you.

(1) As seen from the tittle “smart irrigation system: A vital step towards revolutionizing the agricultural sector in Nigeria.”
Ma, it is known that agriculture is a labour intensive sector capable of providing employments to citizens, but it isn’t properly industrialized the way it should be in Nigeria.
Implementing the smart irrigation system in the scale is one of the “vital step” that should be taken to industrialized the said sector thereby In turn making it labour intensive. It is also capital intensive, however, the results are worth the investments.
(2) farmers often spend most of their times during three major process of farming which include.
I. Planting the crops.
II. Irrigating the field.
III. Harvesting the crops.
However, removing the manual irrigation and making it automatic can lessen the chances of being attacked by bandits. But this only applies to bandits who raid farms.
