Battle For NSE Deputy President Hots Up As Female Candidates Slug Out With Male Counterparts

The council of the Nigerian Society of Engineers has cleared more candidates for the forthcoming election scheduled to hold during the Annual General Meeting taking place between December 6 to 10, 2021 at International Conference Centre, Abuja. Some candidates with outstanding issues were given a nod to contest into various offices.

For the first time, three female candidates are contesting for the post of deputy president of the society slugging it out with an equal number of male counterparts. The females in contest are Engr Margaret Aina Oguntala, Engr. Mayen Modupeola Adetiba, and Engr Edith Ishidi. The male candidates contesting for the same office include Engr. Joseph Olatunde Akinteye, Engr. Adeniran Kilomodemo Ibitoye, and Engr. Obiora Felix Nwankwo.

In recent times, female engineers have been holding offices at branch and division levels as chairmen and national chairmen respectively. The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, APWEN has continued to narrow the gender gap in technical education and appointments through her girl child initiative which encourages young girls to take interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers has never had a female President in its over 63  years of existence. APWEN established nearly 40 years ago has been working to engage female engineers in the profession.
