The government is embarking on a programme to develop technologies for beaming power from space.
The feasibility of Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) was studied in a report commissioned last year by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
“Following the publication of this study, my department is developing a small-scale ‘no-regrets’ innovation programme to support the development of key technologies associated with SBSP, and that also have broader terrestrial applications, and therefore, will contribute to the UK’s net zero ambition whether a space based solar power system is deployed or not,” says Kwasi Kwarteng, the business secretary.
The report envisages a system large enough to deliver the same power as a nuclear power station proving electricity for £50 per megawatt hour, compared to £44 for onshore wind and £41 for offshore wind.
The government has invited proposals for work to contribute to the project,
