For most organizations today, the multi-cloud framework has enabled them to leverage the benefits of the cloud without having to be tied down to any particular vendor and keeping costs low. While the multi-cloud does provide them the flexibility in managing their workflows and such, there is no denying that its tempting costs are a key factor in why businesses pick this option.
Having opted for the multi-cloud may be less expensive, but the reality is, and something which most businesses are beginning to realize only after making this choice, is the complexities that come with this option. The multi-cloud does have its plus points and is a game-changer for businesses in their transformation journey. However, getting all the data and workloads stored on different clouds to work together and moving them in and out can be a hassle.
Hence, many continue to figure out which is the better option. Should they opt for the flexibilities that come with the multi-cloud or should they remain secure and keep their data on-premises. Either way, businesses want to be able to an agile business that is able to cope with the latest demands in technologies.
As such, tech companies continue to innovate new solutions for businesses to manage the multi-cloud. It may not be a seamless process but the solutions being generated by the tech companies are making it simpler for IT teams to handle the complexities of the multi-cloud.
It’s all about the multi-cloud
In his keynote address at Dell Technologies World 2022 (DTW), Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Technologies said that the debate between on-prem and off-prem is over. For him, the future is multi-cloud, with workloads and data flowing seamlessly across the entire environment.
Dell explained that 90% of customers today already have both on-prem and public cloud environments. And 75% are using three or more different clouds.
“At Dell, we have spent decades putting you our customers at the center of an enormous technology ecosystem, and we’re hard at work, innovating the technologies and building the ecosystem to enable true multi-cloud and to deliver the edge, the next frontier, where data becomes competitive advantage immediately at the point of creation,” Dell said in his keynote.
At DTW, Dell Technologies announced that it will be delivering new cloud experiences, an expanded ecosystem, and offerings to help customers manage and protect applications across data centers and multi-cloud environments. These new offerings are designed to help organizations easily store, protect and control their data and applications across an increasing number of platforms and locations.
Dell Technologies also announced that it is enhancing software across its industry-leading storage portfolio, driving increased intelligence, automation, cyber resiliency, and multi-cloud flexibility.
Sam Grocott, Senior Vice President of Dell Technologies Business Unit (DTBU) Marketing in a blog post stated that customers want the ease and agility of the cloud experience and they want that experience everywhere they operate, not just in the public cloud. As such, the announcements made in DTW will be able to give organizations freedom of choice so they can unlock the true potential of multi-cloud.
Enabling the cloud to be developer friendly
Among the announcements in the multi-cloud made at DTW include the introduction of Dell APEX Cyber Recovery Services, the first in a series of new APEX full-stack solutions that deliver a cloud experience, and simplify recovery from cyberattacks. Dell is delivering an as-a-Service experience with standardized configurations, simplified Dell-assisted recovery options, and expertise from nearly 2,000 isolated vault solutions deployed globally.
According to Chuck Whitten, Dell Technologies’ new Co-Chief Operating Officer, multi-cloud is about accessing an ever-expanding set of innovations across clouds and acknowledging the need for the capabilities of the entire ecosystem to deliver modern IT.
“Multi-Cloud also needs to be more developer-friendly with a consistent set of tools so that developers can create, wants, run anywhere, manage consistently, and protect continuously. And we’ve heard you loud and clear – that it needs to be consumable in many ways, including as-a-service. So in short, the world needs multi-cloud by design, not by default. And that is the great unsolved infrastructure challenge that we are working on at Dell Technologies,” he said in his session at DTW.
As such, Dell is extending the reach of its multi-cloud ecosystem and speeding access to its data protection offerings for public clouds with the release of Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for Microsoft Azure. The new service will allow organizations to deploy an isolated cyber vault in the public cloud to more securely protect and isolate data away from a ransomware attack, improving cyber resiliency and helping reduce the impact of cyberattacks as well as providing flexible recovery options in the event of a cyberattack.
Dell also builds on its collaboration with AWS by announcing CyberSense for Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for AWS. With the offering, organizations will be able to use adaptive analytics, scan metadata, and complete files, and implement machine learning and forensic tools to detect, diagnose and speed data recovery. It can also, monitor files and databases to determine if a cyberattack has occurred and identify the last known uncorrupted copy of data to speed a more secure and confidential recovery.
The cloud has a big role for software-driven storage
When it comes to software-driven storage, Dell also announced advancements across Dell PowerStore, PowerMax, and PowerFlex to deliver faster data insights, better multi-cloud data control, and increased cyber resiliency at no cost to existing customers.
For Dell PowerStore, Dell is delivering up to a 50% mixed workload performance boost and up to 66% greater capacity. Dell PowerMax, the world’s most secure, mission-critical storage, will introduce cyber resiliency advancements including cyber vaults for traditional and mainframe deployments.
Meanwhile, Dell PowerFlex’s software-defined infrastructure will consolidate traditional and modern workloads with new file services that allow for unified block and file capabilities on a single platform. PowerFlex simplifies multi-cloud and DevOps with the broadest file and block8 support for all major Kubernetes and container orchestration platforms from Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Red Hat, SUSE, and VMware.
“Our goal here is to offer a choice. You choose how and where to store your data and turn it into insights. So taken together today’s announcements are a meaningful step in giving you choice in how you unlock the capabilities of multi-cloud. But as I said, these are just steps in the journey. You’ll see much more from us in the coming months and years, as we deliver a steady stream of innovation and partnerships to deliver on the promise of multi-cloud and put you at the center of the multi-cloud world,” added Whitten.
