NESTEC 2022 PAPER: Bi-Directional Visitors Counter With Gate Control And Automatic Room Light Controller (On/Off)

ABSTRACT

The visitor counters with automatic gate control is a equipment that is able of remedying against COVID19 and observe  the density of people within the premises and automatically control the light in the room. The door allowing the person to enter beyond the limit is ok, the door will not allow anybody to enter the room if the number of people is equal to the limit nobody can have access to the house, room, offices, organizations, or industries. The device used Infrared Ray sensors for both in and out of the house and the system is interfaced with a microcontroller atmega328P, it uses L293D as a door driver that allows the user to enter and exit the room or house. The LCD displays the performance of the research. The Light Emitting Diode Green indicates the number of people in the house is below the required limit registered in the system while the Red LED indicates the equal number of people leaving the house has reached the required limit registered in the system. The buzzer will alarm if the number of people is equal to the number of people registered in the system and the door will never open again until one person leaves the house then another person can enter again. Automated appliances are in high need in today’s world. With rising living standards, there is an urgent need for the development of circuits that would reduce life’s difficulty to simplicity, especially on this out breaking COVID19.

    1. Thank you Sir,
It’s my pleasure to entertain questions from you.

      2

        1. Good idea
          But I have many questions
1 how does the system know that the
          The number of Parsons entered
          exceed the limit .
2 why you used infrared sensor instead
          of using ultrasound sensor

          0

          0
          1. The system is designed to sen the objects, so it’s defense on the instructions that givan to the system e.g let say you want to 10 people to be limit you require in the office,so give the command of so than it will display on the LCD screen that the limit is 10 and also it’s start counting when you press the start button and at the same time it will display if 7 people on the screen. And at the same if the people reached the maximum require than red LED indicate.

            And second Q.
The IR rays is one that use to sense object, that is why.

            1

            0
  2. My question is why do you chose IR rays instead of other forms of rays?

    3

    0
    1. The things here is obvious you know all this rays(electromagnetic radiations) has there on function(useful) such as there masses, energy and how deeply they penetration object. And one of there useful like:
x- ray use in medical field, ultraviolet use in studying galaxies, gama ray ,radios etc.
So consider IR( infrared rays) is use in remote control and images application and the major work of that IR is to sense and detect object ( you know all object on Earth emit IR radiation in form of heat and these can detect by electronic sensors), so considering the ability
of that sensing and detecting is what make me to use IR rays on this giant work.
Hope you are well clear about the answer.
Really appreciate your question, also I will like more questions from you.
      Thank you.

        1. Engineer, this really impressed me, my question here is that, for example, if , the maximum number of peoples are allowed to entered is ten. Then nine people go in and there is only one person left. Can two people entered at the same time?

          0

          0
          1. Omo 😄 Mr Muhammad you make me laugh, I have mentioned and will mention again, the device Will alow that two people to enter because the door will not open until one is step back.

You get it, thank you for your concern.

        2. My question is based on IR as we all known IR has many effect to our health especially in eye it can cause redness, swelling and it can effect retina which it can lead to the loss of vision so how do we prevent ourself from all these effect.

          1. No bro, I said infrared rays is use to sense the object then red LED indicate the people reached maximum requirements. And that infrared rays had its side effects but not harmful the body or object.

  6. Very impressive 👏 May it be carried out soon.
My question is about the red lead. Should it be indicating the number of people leaving or serves as an indicator that the maximum number of people registered has been reached?

    0

    0
    1. Okay! Yes the red LED indicate the maximum number of the people that registered had reached the requirements and also the buzzer will sound, not the one that are out, only on the LCD screen will display the number that enter and leaves in the place.
      Hope you understand.

      Nice questions thank you.

  7. 1-What is the cost of that device?
    2- Is it affordable?

    0

    0
    1. The device very cheap ( costless) you know electronic devices are the most cheapest and affordable in engineering field.
So I can say is less cost because the prototype the we makes is not cost much, and yes is affordable also don’t forget is one the factor that we are considered when designed object.
So that the device can useful in our nation considering the economic of country.

      Hope you get me.

    1. I understand, thank you.
I have another question. Is it designed to work on buildings with multiple and different entries and exit doors or it can only work on a single-door structure?

      0

      0
      1. No, its designed on the single door structure but remember only one device for entry and exit door will be served. Because it uses L293D as a door driver that allows the user to enter and exit the room or house. That L293D is motor driver IC, is a single IC that capable of driving to two motors independently.
So if there is need in multiple door is another things.

  14. Maa sha Allah! This is indeed a very creative initiative, besides COVID 19 issue, I think it’s also a way of securing an environment, nice idea Mr. Mu’utasim.
But I do have a question, from the major devices mentioned in the abstract, I thought I’ll see something like proximity sensor which will tell the system that it has a visitor coming for it to get opened or closed. So is it that you used another sensor in substitute of that or not? Thank you.

    0

    0
    1. Wow!!! Thank you Mr muftahu that nice questions.
So from the design of our device there no such kind of that proximity sensor but we will consider it as an another advancement of our design that will be add, means while we are not substitute anything.
So our design is only use push button that you can press so that the door will be open and press again the door will be close.

      Hope you get me.
      Thank you

    1. Okay bro, but it had been mentioned in the paper.
The above work is performed by and controlled by a
microcontroller. It receives signals from sensors, and this signal is controlled by Arduino
software (IDE). Also, the total number of people in the room, whether added or subtracted, will
still be reflected in the LCD.

      Thank you.

    Here are my questions please

    1) Has anyone make some reserch like this before you? If yes, what are the limitations he encountered? And have made any significant improvement Pleese?

    2) Based on my understanding, the counter detects only when one single person enters or leaves the room, what about if two persons walk in/out at the same time?

3)Is their any provision of power that the system can work with, if power outage occur? And how can it work?

    Thank you

    1. Mr Sulaiman thank you for your observations and nice questions.
      1. I can say Yes, base on the reference of my paper you will understand there are many relevant research related to my paper and they have there own way of or reason of there research. So I consider there limitations then, I improve my research from there and d I related it to the demand of my people or my national in general.
      2. You know base on the design there is push button that you press then the door will open likewise if you close it. So the door Will not open till one person step back. that means it will not allow two people to enter.
      3. Yes that why the device design to use both AC and DC power, so that there so alternative for power outage.

      Hope I made myself clear.
      Thank you once again.

    1. Okay! Mr Abubakar

Since it mentioned it use to count, so it’s another useful because counting is time consuming, helps to employee efficiency and effectiveness, time saving and an organization’s sales potential, among other things also it reduced life complexity to simple.

    1. Thank you by the way,
Incase if emergency we should just switch off the device, so that the door will be manual. And also for the flexibility of device, yes is flexible because you can register people as much you want.

  25. I have gone through the whole paper, and indeed, your effort is commendable. Kudos to you potential engineer.
So, my question goes like this. In your literature review [1] line 7, You made mentioned that “ The counting of visitors can be time consuming, so it helps to maximize employee efficiency and effectiveness, time saving and an organization’s sales potential, among other things “ I need clarification on how will it maximize such ? Thank you.

    0

    0
    1. What’s it said here is that; when you place it, and it purposely use for counting, it will reduce the services of human kind, because it’s the machine (device) that serves the job. So it will help for the mentioned features: time consuming, so it helps to maximize employee efficiency and effectiveness, time saving and an organization’s sales potential, among other things. E.g let say you want place it at the door of company, and maybe five people use to count everyone that use to come and also for them to count all employees and staff that come it will take them 1hour, so by placing the device 1 or 2 people is okay for the door because the device will count everything and within 30minutes it done the counting. So you see that is what it said.

      Hope you get it.

  27. This is a very good research work that meet present Nigeria needs

We experienced bandit and kidnapping right away from our respective houses and this was due to insecurities.
This could be used to curb insecurities in Nigeria as the door won’t allow any other entrant except the total number of people expected.
    My question on this is.
Why don’t u use camera coverage so that it will only allow the captured face to enter?

Also since it is an electronic device definitely it can be hacked, is their any possible way in which third party can’t add to the total number of people that will enter
    ?
And lastly can all this be used by nigeria houses as we know that majority of her dwellers are poor

    0

    0
    1. Yeah! It’s good to use the camera as an additional device for the system, so that it will capture the face of any person that will enter, but do you know it’s another task and also not the main purpose for our device and our research, because our device is mainly use to count the people that enter the venue not to identify those enter weather are known or not, and again if to say we using the camera as had mentioned the is need for registered or data base of those people people means while you have be known in place that you will enter.

And secondly, yes this is the whole problem that not even in Nigeria but for the whole nations are experiencing the problems hackers.

Lastly the device is cheaper that everyone can possess like the way we are possess a smart phones.
      Thank you.

  28. The implementation of the work in the paper will reduce direct contact with door knobs, which will directly reduce the time taken to open and close a door during entry and exit.

    The following is my question:

How long will the door wait after it has opened before closing?

Is it possible to set the door open without closing for some period?

    0

    0
    1. Yeah sure it will reduce direct contact.
Yes it’s possible to let the door open for some period of time and you can switch off the control so that it will be manual.

  30. 1. What happens if two people enter/exit the door at the same time from a single press of button?
    2. Although not included in the method, the buzzer is supposed to buzz whenever the threshold of registered number of persons is reached. Is the threshold hardcoded or can be reset without re-writing the code?

    0

    0
    1. It’s will not allow two people to enter because the sensor will only sense and allow one person then the door will open.
And for the threshold it uses L293D as a door driver that allows the user to enter and exit the room or house. That L293D is motor driver IC, is a single IC that capable of driving to two motors independently. And also is not hard code, is something that can be reset, no need to write any code, is automatically set. The buzzer will buzz if the number of people is okay as the required.

      1. Please explain how the system will stop two people, moving shoulder to shoulder to enter or exit at the same time…also explain how the threshold can be done outside the code…thank you

        0

        0
        1. Know I understand your questions and I look through the device again and I see it will let two persons to enter if the go through it shoulder to shoulder and the counter will count as one person enter or exist.
The microcontroller does this work, It receives the signals from the IR
sensors, and this signal is operated under the control of source code which is stored in the
microcontroller. The Microcontroller atmega328 continuously monitors the Infrared sensor since
it is the brain of the system. When any object passes or interrupts the IR sensor signal is sent to
the microcontroller and the result is displayed on the LCD screen.

In simple terms the signal is operated under the control of source code which is stored in the
          microcontroller.

  32. 1. The approach presented in this article senses the movement of individuals both in and out of a particular room using dedicated sensors at the entrance and exit. However, would it still record two individual that enters a room at the same time as one?. Besides, are there no existing approaches that have developed the proposed solution, if yes, what distinguishes yours from them and why should yours be adopted?

    2. On what matric will the performance of the proposed solution be tested to establish its percentage accuracy?
