How To Manage Your Remote Team

A leader’s role while working remotely is not to merely direct but to empower employees to achieve what the organisation requires

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered how individuals operate in the majority of sectors. For example, the definition of “work” has shifted from a physical location to a mental state for many individuals. And Recruitery is an illustration.

Because we are developing our business in Indonesia, we have excellent employees there. And as we build out our business throughout the pandemic, I am confident that we will still have a scattered staff that compensates for its lack of closeness via excessive communication and adaptability.

We are enabling our team members to work from wherever is most convenient for them and connecting them to the essence of our business, which is centred on low-impact local spatial solutions.

So what has a smaller and more localised effect than working from home? And since the introduction of Recruitery four years ago, we’ve learned a great deal. Consider the following factors while constructing and managing a remote team.

The plan should be apparent, but it is not vital

Clear communication is vital when managing a remote team, but not constantly. The attitude is perpetually unsustainable and does not create the highest quality work for anybody. One of the benefits of not working in an open workplace is the flexibility to arrange uninterrupted hours of concentration throughout the day and week.

Personal preference is essential for optimising schedules since it enables workers to call in at the most convenient times. Some individuals are more productive in the morning, while others prefer to work in the late afternoon.

Allowing somewhat asynchronous scheduling encourages individuals to be better prepared, requesting items in advance rather than at the last minute. Essentially, it elevates the significance of planning. And more planning increases efficiency.

The source of motivation is the work, not the management

Another issue that must be evaluated in a distant situation is motivation. According to research, in-office incentives, such as celebratory happy hours and extravagant workplace amenities, produce momentary conformity rather than intrinsic, long-term drive.

To genuinely drive a team, each member’s task must correspond to their interests and skills. In other words, it must find a balance between difficulty and significance.

It might be more challenging to determine if an employee is uninspired in a remote workplace. For this reason, it is essential to foster a culture that encourages individuals to speak out and seek assistance when needed.

As a result, workers who do comparable quality and quantity labour are virtually self-managing. This is particularly true and advantageous in cultures of remote work.

Invest in direct interaction

It may seem counterintuitive to include live time in an article on the culture of remote work, but we are well aware of the failure potential of remote or hybrid work. I miss impromptu coffee excursions and group humour from the past. However, the new advantages of remote employment are far more attractive.

On the other hand, human nature compels us to seek interpersonal connections. Utilise an office or offsite organisation budget if you are fortunate enough to have one.

We are, after all, human, and people are constantly seeking connection. Problem-solving “in real life,” ideas, jokes, experiences, and the majority of “successful” things are unique and more profound; therefore, we guarantee a chance for the team and our pick to be together.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, a leader’s role is not to merely direct people to do what they want but to empower them to achieve what the organisation requires to maximise their abilities and skills.

My suggestion for small enterprises applies to hybrid and even conventional on-site teams as well: Regardless of how you organise your office, if you give your workers a degree of autonomy within your more giant company, via schedule flexibility, ownership of day-to-day chores, and long-term objectives, you will have not only a happy workforce but also a more successful firm.
