Hybrid Cloud Is Key To Unlocking Digital Transformation Opportunities –IBM

Hybrid cloud infrastructure is still in many businesses’ transformation futures as the cloud continues to develop. Since a hybrid cloud is a mix and match of services from a public cloud, private cloud, and possibly data center, it can easily integrate the advantages of all three infrastructures. This kind of infrastructure is flexible and scalable as the business expands because it was created particularly to meet the demands of businesses.

Interestingly, more than 77% of respondents, according to recent worldwide market research from IBM, have embraced a hybrid cloud strategy, which can help accelerate digital transformation. However, the majority of responding firms are having difficulty coordinating the complexity of all their cloud settings.

As organizations confront skills gaps, security issues, and compliance barriers, less than one-quarter of respondents worldwide manage their hybrid cloud infrastructures comprehensively, which can create blind spots and put data at risk.

To help enterprises in mapping their cloud transformation and give them the tools to assess their own progress, IBM commissioned The Harris Poll to produce The IBM Transformation Index: State of Cloud. Businesses can use the Index to gather quantifiable indicators that can help them measure their success and identify areas for opportunity and growth because it is built on a foundation that makes use of the insights of seasoned cloud specialists.

In order to determine where organizations are progressing or merely emerging on their transformation journeys, the Index surveyed more than 3,000 business and technology decision-makers from 12 countries and 15 industries, including financial services, manufacturing, government, telecommunications, and healthcare.

Why is there a disconnect in businesses cloud transformation journey?

The Index shows a significant link between the deployment of hybrid clouds and the advancement of digital transformation. In fact, according to 71% of those surveyed, without a solid hybrid cloud strategy makes it difficult to fully achieve the potential of a digital transformation. However, just 27% of those surveyed meet the criteria for being classified as “advanced” in their change.

So, what is the issue? The results show that:

  • Compliance: Businesses say that it is now too difficult to ensure compliance in the cloud, especially as enforcement of regulatory and compliance standards intensifies globally.
  • Security: Security issues still exist, despite the fact that corporations have adopted a number of security solutions to protect workloads in the cloud.
  • Skills: Organizations are failing to establish a comprehensive hybrid cloud strategy, which can lead to gaps in security and compliance and increase risk across cloud environments as they deal with the reality of a skills shortage.

According to Howard Boville, the head of IBM Cloud Platform, compliance is at the top of business leaders’ minds as global regulatory obligations increase. For individuals who work in highly regulated areas, this problem is even more pressing.

“Yet at the same time, they are facing a growing threat landscape – one that demands holistic management of their multi-cloud environments to avoid the risks of a Frankencloud – an environment that’s so disconnected, it’s difficult to navigate and can be nearly impossible to secure, particularly against third and fourth party risks,” said Boville.

The alternative is to pay the price of the Frankencloud, he continued, and they feel that an integration plan to unite these various piece parts is what sets the leaders apart from the rest of the pack.

The main benefit of cloud computing for organizations, according to Rick Villars, Group Vice President of Worldwide Research at IDC, is quick access to the cutting-edge tools, data sources, and applications needed to manage current challenges and transform industries. A company must be able to use and efficiently control hybrid cloud assets across numerous locations because no individual cloud can meet all of its needs.

“IBM with its focus on providing a holistic hybrid cloud strategy is well positioned to help organizations address the security, data management, and compliance complexities that can prevent them from taking full advantage of cloud innovation,” says Villars.

Based on the Index, IBM will provide an interactive application that will give firms ongoing feedback on how well their transformation is going.
