Abstract: Standardisation is a key part of the microeconomic infrastructure with the benefits arising from the reduction of costs and the growth of quality. It is in Nigeria’s interest to engage in international standardisation activities as such is of benefit to the economy. This paper aims to raise awareness
on the importance of standardisation activities, its economic and other effects, as well as the importance of taking part in the process of developing standards within the International and national standardisation bodies. Identifying the positive relationship between perceived effects of standardisation as innovative, economic, technical–technological, and social effects, this paper also identifies approaches through which Nigeria’s standardisation bodies (SON and NNIEC) may engage with international standardisation bodies with the view of maximising its socio–economic benefits.
