When Intel debuted their 13th Gen Intel Core processors in September last year, the US chip giant dubbed those as the ‘world’s fastest desktop processor’. Less than four months later, at the world’s largest annual consumer technology event, CES 2023, Intel took the stage to unveil the complete lineup of their 13th Gen Intel Core laptop processors instead, calling them the ‘world’s fastest mobile processor’.
Intel’s 13th Gen Intel® Core™ mobile processors, according to the company, ‘brings superior performance and experiences to mobile platforms.’ Overall, the US chip giant introduced 32 new 13th Gen Intel Core mobile processors accompanied by a rich suite of features and capabilities for all laptop segments.
At the top of the spectrum is Intel’s Core i9-13980HX chip that packs a huge 24 cores, a first for a laptop. It also includes eight performance cores for heavy-duty tasks like gaming and 14 efficiency cores for mundane activities like web browsing. According to Intel’s statement from CES 2023, the top-of-the-line HX can reach peak speeds of 5.6GHz – “the highest clock speed available for the laptop market – delivering up to 11% faster single-thread performance and 49% faster multitask performance over the previous generation,” the chip giant noted.
This speed is only reached by the chip’s performance cores when pushed to their limits. Otherwise, they usually run at 2.2GHz. To put that in perspective, Apple’s M1 Max, the company’s most powerful chip, reaches clock speeds of 3.2GHz, according to Anandtech. On top of that, the HX is compatible with up to 128GB of RAM, a number large enough to satisfy the insatiable appetite of gamers and professionals in need of hardcore performance.
“The 13th-generation Intel Core mobile processor family delivers unrivalled, scalable performance for leadership platforms across all laptop segments,” Intel’s Client Computing Group executive vice president and general manager Michelle Johnston Holthaus, said in a statement. Besides the HX series of chips, Intel also rolled out its new 13th-generation Core P and Core U series processors meant for more mainstream laptops.
The Core P and Core U processors feature 14 cores, 6 for performance and 8 for efficiency. Then there’s also Intel’s new Core N series chips unveiled at CES 2023, Designed for the education market. “Following the sunsetting of the Intel Pentium and Intel Celeron branding, Intel today introduced the new Intel Processor and Intel Core i3 in the N-series family of products – purpose-built for the education segment, entry-level computing and IoT edge native applications,” the company stated.
Intel noted the processors offer up to 28% better application performance and 64% better graphics performance on the Intel Processor over the previous generation, with up to 10 hours of HD video playback. “These processors are designed for education and consumer segments that need a lower, value-oriented price point, but still require performance and high-quality experiences in areas like video collaboration and productivity,” Intel said.
The chip giant highlighted that more than 50 designs from Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Asus are expected in 2023 as “Intel continues to lead ecosystem partnerships for ChromeOS and Windows.”
