NIEEE Celebrates World Engineering Day, Calls For Resilient Nation

The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (NIEEE) marked this year’s World Engineering Day with funfair and pomp recently through a webinar that was organised to commemorate the day by the Nigerian association.

In his welcome address, the National President of NIEEE, Engr. Akan Michael, said the theme, “Engineering Innovation for a More Resilient World,” is apt, meeting the reality of the time.

According to him, for the association, which comprises electrical and electronic engineering practitioners with diverse disciplines of well over 100 interwoven and interconnected specialties, it has to bond to drive the engine of innovation for a resilient nation.

He noted that the nation might be resilient yet must be receptive to innovative ideas, solutions and development.

Akan said, “The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, through the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), the melting pot of the nation’s engineering innovations, has heralded many innovative feats and the management needs support to do more.

NASENI, ministries and agencies working to develop engineering innovations should continue to work and support innovative research with relevant institutes.

Today, research and development is one of the core mandates of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and we are ready to partner with any agency in this regard.”

Michael appreciated speakers at the event who cut across the different disciplines of electrical and electronics engineering: poser, telecom, instrumentation, control, etc.

He noted that, “Engineering, especially electrical and electronics engineering, is the foundation for engineering innovation and the nation and the world waits to receive us.

In his speech at the event, Dr Jerome M. Gumpy, one of the guest speakers, said the questions are, what drives the need for engineering innovation and why is engineering innovation necessary?

According to Humpy, one must be aware of one’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT); pay close attention to innovative thinkers, by identifying the problems; find an innovation partner who can Iterate on ideas to manually solve and draft potential solutions and break down the solution into sections based on logical factors; iteratively research and apply technology to design an innovative solution.
