The Blue Apple Educational Foundation (BAEF), has thrown its doors open to signing of memorandum of understanding with relevant bodies who wishes to collaborate in building partnership and unlocking the full potentials of the Nigerian engineering students.
The Foundation is leveraging the National Engineering Science and Technology Essay Competition (NESTEC) to addressing the challenges affecting the growth of Science, Technology, Engineering and Innovation (STEI) in Nigeria.
Engr. Michael Akan, the President of BAEF and the Chairman, NESTEC Board of Trustees, gave the indication in his remark at the 3rd edition of the 2022 NESTEC Award Ceremony held virtually on Saturday.
BAEF, the organizers of this event, disclosed that the sole objectives is to unlock the untapped potentials among our youths in the field of engineering science, Promote research among students, Encourage and develop capacity for technical paper and essay writing, Introduce the students into mainstream trending and advances in engineering science and technology and Create global opportunities for students to showcase their talents.
While committed to the mandates of the foundation, Akan sought support of TETFund to provide the body with grant to enable its launch a viable platform that will guarantee the academia access to more learning.
The BAEF President who further revealed that the Journal which will be launched in due time only requires some finishing touches to its website. He added that with the BoT in place, the foundation will realize its vision of awarding scholarships to deserving students in Nigeria by next year in fulfillment of one of its noble mandates.
Commending the efforts of everyone who ensured that the 2022 NESTEC Award Ceremony which was supposed to hold at it traditional month of November was successfully achieved, Akan assured of his continues engagement with the students that presented in view of the current realities on how their ideas can be translated towards the development of the nation.
Meanwhile, the Guest Lecturer, Dr. Emmanuel Majiyebo Eronu, Department of Electrical, Electronic Engineering, University of Abuja, gave a paper presentation which titled: “Using Artificial Intelligence to Enhance Research Productivity”.
Eronu who defined Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the stimulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems, said AI will enable researchers to overcome the challenges of managing an overwhelming amount of information while striving for efficiency and innovation in their work in this dispensation of advanced technologies.
The Guest Lecturer while explaining the positive and negative aspects of AI, listed some commonly used AI tools in research which include: Machine Learning Algorithms, Natural Language Processing, Data Visualisation, Recommender Systems, and ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer). Speaking, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof Mohammed Ndaliman, Managing Director/CEO of Science Equipment Development Institute, Minna applauded the initiative of the foundation and encourage the students to work hard as world awaits them.
The 2022 National Engineering Science and Technology Essay Competition and Award Ceremony featured paper presentation by twelve (12) Engineering students from various tertiary institutions who participated virtually and also monetary reward was given to first three students who scored higher points in their presentations.
They include: Adeleke Wasiu Ademola, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, who presented a Paper Tittled: IoT-Based Extension Socket For Power Outage Management. He scored 67.67 per cent to emerge 1st runner up with a cheque of N500,000. While Emmanuel Nnagozie Eke, Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, presented a Paper Tittled: Design And Implementation Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle For Monitoring The 2023 General Election In Nigeria. He scored 63 per cent to be the 2nd runner-up with a take home cheque of N300,000.
Dogbane Makanjuola Houstrouvi, Department of Electrical Engineering, Yaba College Of Technology who also presented a Paper Tittled: Agriculture, Utilizing Internet Of Things In Monitoring Farming Processes as the 3rd runner-up took home with cheque sum of N200,000 having scored 58.33 per cent.
However, out of over 200 received by the foundation, 12 students made it to the final.
