In a remarkable leap for Nigerian engineering, I am proud to share that I have successfully built the first self-sustaining turbojet engine in the country, and possibly in all of Africa. For those unfamiliar with the term, a turbojet engine is the power behind most fighter jets, propelling them through the skies at incredible speeds. What makes this engine self-sustaining is its ability to maintain operation at idle speed—around 35,000 RPM (revolutions per minute)—without needing the starter motor or external batteries. Once it starts, it only shuts down when the fuel supply is cut off.
Today, despite the absence of ear protection (the earmuffs are arriving next week), I couldn’t resist running an impromptu test at mild power. The engine roared to life with a satisfying hum, proving its ability to sustain itself. In one of the video clips, my assistant demonstrates how the engine shuts down when the fuel is turned off—a testament to the reliability of our design.
This turbojet engine, built in Ebonyi State, is not just a personal achievement but a major milestone for the Nigerian engineering landscape. Once we have proper protective gear, we’ll be conducting a full-power test, complete with the afterburner. The excitement is building!
