The idea of super soldiers in high-tech exoskeletons—reminiscent of Iron Man or Starship Troopers—has long fascinated military strategists and sci-fi writers alike.

For decades, the US military has pursued equipping its special forces with enhanced armoured suits, providing superior protection and tactical advantages. But now, the dream has evolved from bulky “Iron Man suits” to something more practical: AI-powered tactical assistance.

The US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) shifted its focus towards the development of the Hyper-Enabled Operator (HEO) some years ago. This next-generation soldier leverages advanced AI on the battlefield to make faster decisions, move more effectively, and stay ahead of opponents. The evolution marks a major shift in modern military strategy, where information dominance trumps brute force.

From armour to algorithms: The shift in military thinking

In 2013, SOCOM launched the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit (TALOS) project. Its goal was to create armoured suits capable of withstanding small-arms fire, reducing fatigue, and enhancing combat performance. The initiative began after losing a Navy SEAL operator during an operation to free captives in Afghanistan.

Despite significant effort, TALOS failed to integrate its complex systems into a functional suit, and the programme was discontinued in 2019. However, the lessons learned paved the way for the Hyper-Enabled Operator (HEO).

Rather than focusing on physical strength, the HEO emphasises real-time data processing and battlefield awareness, giving soldiers the ability to outthink their opponents. According to SOCOM officials, the goal is to provide “the right information to the right person at the right time.”

The power of the HEO: Smarter, not stronger

HEO represents a future where cognitive capability, rather than brute strength, defines battlefield success. In real-time combat, AI systems analyse the environment and deliver actionable data to soldiers, giving them a critical advantage.

Think of it like the UAV tool in games like Call of Duty: Warzone, where players gain insights on enemy positions, allowing for smarter tactical decisions. The HEO system aims to offer a similar edge in real-world combat.

Imagine an operator scanning a crowded area, using AI to distinguish between ordinary local activity and potential threats. Instead of relying on gut instincts alone, AI provides insights that help soldiers make faster, more informed decisions. While AI isn’t replacing a soldier’s trusty companion (like a loyal canine), it’s quickly becoming their indispensable battlefield sidekick.

The “OODA Loop” and cognitive dominance

The OODA Loop—Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act—was developed by Air Force Colonel John Boyd based on his dogfighting experiences during the Korean War. This feedback model suggests that battlefield success relies on the speed and precision of decision-making.

The HEO aims to enhance this process by using AI to help soldiers observe and react faster than their enemies, achieving what’s known as “cognitive overmatch.”

With access to enhanced intel, soldiers can anticipate enemy actions, respond with greater speed, and always stay one step ahead. In essence, the HEO transforms the battlefield into a real-time chess game, where smart decisions win wars.

Key technologies powering the HEO

To make this vision a reality, SOCOM relies on cutting-edge technologies:

  • Edge computing: Soldiers need portable systems that process data even in remote locations. Edge computing enables real-time analysis without relying on external networks, ensuring rapid, actionable insights.
  • Advanced sensors: HEO depends on sensors that detect everything from environmental conditions to biometric data like heartbeats and facial recognition. These sensors gather crucial information for AI to analyse.
  • Language translation: The HEO system includes a translation tool called the Versatile Intelligent Translation Assistant (VITA), which translates foreign languages in real time, even from visual inputs like graffiti, allowing soldiers to navigate diverse environments seamlessly.
  • Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLoS) communication: In chaotic scenarios where satellite connections may fail, this system allows soldiers to stay connected and maintain communications even when traditional networks are compromised.

The ‘gray zone’: Where the HEO will operate

Interestingly, the HEO’s capabilities extend beyond conventional combat. SOCOM officials believe the next major use of HEO will be in the “gray zone”—a space between peace and war, where direct combat isn’t always required. In these situations, soldiers use HEO technology to blend in with local populations, gather valuable intelligence, and protect civilians, all while maintaining a low profile.

This ability to operate in ambiguous environments could make HEO crucial for future missions where discretion and intelligence-gathering are more important than physical confrontation.

Challenges ahead: Will HEO deliver?

While the promise of the HEO is exciting, its development comes with significant challenges. Creating a lightweight system that can process vast amounts of data quickly is no easy task. There’s also concern about whether soldiers can adapt to the technology—particularly if it becomes cumbersome or distracting.

As author Robert A. Heinlein wrote in Starship Troopers, “If you load a mud foot down with a lot of gadgets that he has to watch, somebody a lot more simply equipped—say with a stone ax—will sneak up and bash his head in while he is trying to read a vernier.” This cautionary sentiment underscores the balance the military must strike between technological enhancement and simplicity.
