A major agreement aimed at revolutionising the telecommunications sector in Lagos has been reached between the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) and other key stakeholders.
The unified strategy also aims to “bring order to the sector, improve connectivity and ensure widespread access to high-quality telecommunications services across Lagos.”
The strategic alliance, stakeholders note, signals a concerted effort to address existing challenges and pave the way for a more efficient and accessible digital landscape for the residents of Lagos.
Building upon the agreement for a unified strategy, the collaboration between NCC, LASIMRA, and industry stakeholders is set to tackle several key areas. Foremost among these is the streamlining of regulatory processes, aiming to create a more conducive environment for telecommunications operators. This includes addressing the complexities surrounding infrastructure deployment, particularly fiber optic installations, which have previously led to damages to public assets.
The Tower Enumeration Project, a critical component of this strategy, will provide a comprehensive overview of existing telecom infrastructure in Lagos. This audit will enable authorities to identify and rectify any irregularities, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. By fostering a more transparent and accountable sector, the initiative aims to boost investor confidence and encourage further investment in Lagos’s digital infrastructure.
Furthermore, the unified strategy emphasizes the importance of public-private partnerships. By engaging with licensed telecommunications operators, represented by ALTON, the collaboration seeks to leverage industry expertise and resources to drive innovation and improve service delivery. This cooperative approach is expected to lead to the development of tailored solutions that address the specific needs of Lagos residents, ensuring equitable access to reliable and affordable telecommunications services.
